"Wow, that would look so cool in my bedroom"............said the event guest who just took my fixture.
Do you know what a safety cable and small padlock is?;) You also would not want to use those just any and every place. "So why buy them in the first case?" you may ask? Well because of their quality that when providing your services for Upscale events, the quality of your service will stand out more with high quality equipment. Again think Cab vs Limo analogy.

So what's the difference, labor-wise, from having to run electrical cable and safety cables? You'll have the same issues trying to cross doorways, not to mention, trying to hide them and make the install look decent. And do you really think you're going to have safety cables and padlocks sitting around without brides complaining about how ugly they look?

lock them to WHAT? Most of the receptions I've been to have solid walls, tables & chairs...I can't come up with something to lock them TO....
They may not be feasible in every case. Again that is why I stated, use them in places where you know that theft is not likely to happen. I won't leave my equipment unattended in a club but at the Country Clubs where I go people find things like diamond rings and earrings on the floor and turn them in, usually to me so i can make an announcement. If nobody claims them, I give it to the person in charge with someone as my witness.

1600.00 per light...they are not on my "musttobuy" list.

How do I secure my battery lights? Well, I keep them on all the time. How many people will grab the blinding bright light?

If I'm not at the venue for the entire evening, just renting and setting the lights, for table uplighting I secure them with the safety cable and the padlock (takes a few seconds - that's the labor-wise difference) and for the walls I try to tape the brackets pretty hard. I know they look nice and clean sitting flat on the floor but you have to do what you have to do... :)
Also, make sure with manager that I'm the only one to touch them. What else could be done?

I would think a more expensive light would more more likely to be stolen.

If someone was gonna steal it...
I'd rather they stole my cab, rather than my limo.

Most lay people won't know the price. Unless they look up the price, most other DJs won't know either. A sheep in wolves clothing! ;)

Do they stock these at the Dollar Store?

Yeah, but if you owned them...which light would YOU rather lose?
:-/

How many? I had one just two weeks ago. It happens and on a regular basis. Were it not for the wire I believe it would happen more and they'd be walking away.

If I owned them it would be because I had a need for them and was using them. This would also mean that I could recoup my investment within a year on lets say a dozen.

Probably because they were wired. All you have to do is pull the plug and walk away. It takes a while to figure out where is the switch on the battery powered unit. Especially when you are trying to steal and run. That's my theory, needs to be proven....Maybe if you drunk, you don't care but then people will notice.

I had none stolen last year. I had over 10 rentals with on average 20 pars uplighting the walls. Wired pars. I don't worry about the pars uplighting the tables as they are attached to the leg and the safety pin.

Why are we talking about someone stealing these lights? Why would you do an event somewhere that you think something can or will get stolen? I don't go do events where I think something will get stolen. If you think the venue is a place that it might happen then why would you go there to work? To me it's common sense. Also I don't leave my gear unattended. Either I'm there or someone I trust is there to make sure that my gear will still be there and damage is done to my gear.

Why would you leave your gear unattended in the first place?

Dude, stuff is stolen EVERYWHERE. Thieves do not discriminate based on the venue, so it doesn't matter if you're playing in a dump or a country club. If somebody wants something badly enough, they'll take it without hesitation.

This question, coming from the dude who posts about gunfire at his gigs, is epic.

Rick like I've said today I'm careful where I do events at. I just don't do gigs any where. Me personally I haven't done a gig somewhere and stuff was stolen. Like I said I wouldn't leave my gear unattended except to go to the bathroom and I'm right back. So since this subject has come up, how many of you have had something stloen while performing at a gig?

DjMixWhoeverHasYourLoginInfo -- that is plenty of time for a thief. When I was toting discs, I had an entire stack lifted one evening....at a nice wedding.

But, I can see why you have no fears of getting things stolen, since your 'partners' get it for free anyways.
