The local bridal shows don't charge, so local brides wouldn't dare pay for admission.
This is the first time we've had one of these in the area, so there is no precedent.
This is a Country Club, and their advertising budget is small,
so I think they are just trying to break even if attendance is low.
It'll be interesting to see if the idea catches on...because I'm sure there are a lot of people looking to tap the market.

What the F*** are you talking about! I didn't have a party where people payed to come and gave me a gift. Now just because you can't pull off such a thing doesn't mean others can't. I have friends of mine that have parties they promote where it cost money to come to the party and they have been very successful! One of my friends is having a party in May and has been doing such parties for years that are a big success most of the time.Sounds like one of Mix's "parties" -- you have to pay to get in, and then give him a gift.
He had one party in a place that holds over 600 people. The party got shut down by the fire marshal because the place where the party was at couldn't hold 1,300 people. That's how many people showed up. After everyone got paid he told me he made 9k. He gets to have parties in a place and it doesn't cost him a thing.
I can't believe we're back to this subject and that you've never heard of a DJ doing such a thing. I guess you live in a bubble and don't get out much. Now that's just one example. I have other friends that are doing the same thing.
Actually, I do hibernate Jan, Feb, March up here -- it gets a bit chilly up here. It's up to 28 right now, which I consider a good day.
I have a number of friends (and customers) fairly close to your area. No one has ever mentioned having a "party" -- it's simply an event.
If you want to charge people to come to said event -- I would suggest you hire Paul McCartney, or the Rolling Stones.
What difference does it make what it's called an event or a party. By most here they wouldn't give a party/event and charge people to get in. To them that's a big no no.
Do you know WHY most DJ's don't host parties and charge admission? I'll type real slow so everyone can follow along at home. It's insurance. It's a liability issue. As the HOST of an event, you need a whole different insurance plan than if you are hired to DJ whatever function it is you do. Now if a organization hires us to DJ at their event/party/whatever they want to call it, I could care less if they charge at the door. It's not my issue. If you choose to charge money at the door for your own event, be prepared to pay the consequences when something happens; someone gets hurt, property is damaged, etc. As the money collector, you're gonna be responsible.
Not necessarily. If the Promoter is renting the space and everything is his/her responsibility, then yes. If I went into an agreement with a Club and my compensation is the Door Proceeds then I may be sharing the responsibilities with the Club. It will all depend on how the agreement is written. The Door Proceeds can be Collected for several reasons, payment for advertising where the Club is banking on making its money at the Bar etc. I have been involved in different kinds of Events but one has to know what they are doing. My Gig next month Pimp & Hookers Ball is the responsibility of the Venue. I am being paid a DJ Fee plus a % of the Bar Receipts for advertising/marketing. The Venue has to supply everything including security.
taking a % of the gate per contract is different than hosting a party.

Most DJs in my neck of the woods and also based on my experience don't host Parties because thy don't know how to do it. They just wait to be hired.
That's for sure!! Many DJs are poor promoters...so it's not the best venture for them.
What happens with some is they want to start out big and think they will get to make a ton of money.
I've learned to start off small. Find a place that isn't that big to start off with in the beginning. So if only a few people show up it won't look too bad. Then as things get better find a bigger place to have the event. The big thing is to make sure people know who you are. If they don't know you they won't come and support you. The 2 other big things is in the beginning just concentrate on breaking even. So if you do make anything above that then you can say the party was a success. Secondly don't burn people out with one place. Just because an event is a success in one place don't keep having them there all the time. People will bored and look for a new place to hang out.
As Val mentioned, you are going to need insurance if you are the host/promoter. You will also need to make sure that ASCAP, BMI and SESAC are paid for your rights to perform their music. If your restaurant/bar owner is not paying those fees, you will be responsible (or at the least get sued by the owner, after he has to pay the fees).
You will also be responsible for paying the security. Having a fire marshall check the place, and you and your partner cleaning up afterward.
There's a lot more to this than you think Mix.
