Was $20 dollars enough?

I agree with the fact that I've never used a stand for a minister either. However, we don't know how the whole thing went down. It's possible that the couple was not going to have anything mic'd and this was sprung at the last moment and the DJ was trying to help them out. A whole bunch of different scenarios are possible.

I've asked for assistance before in unique situations, and I've given help in situations when I can.

I think it probably comes down to whether you know the other DJ or not. If it's somebody I know, you better believe I'll bend over backwards to help them. If it's some punk that comes in wanting me to cover his backside, I'll decline. Chances are quite likely they'll never bring your stuff back.

That's why I recommended getting something(a deposit of some sort) to remind them to bring it back.

It was another example of what some people call a professional DJ in action again on that weekend. He had placed his 1 powered speaker behind the gazebo and had his very cheap probably 15 foot wired microphone on the table in the middle of the gazebo. The microphone barely reached the table so I could see why this Pastor was having a problem with what he was given to work with.
 
It's difficult to determine what the other DJ was told or was prepared for, but I'll stand by my comments. If I ask someone to borrow a pen, I don't expect to be charged.

There are no RIGHT or WRONG answers in a "WHAT WOULD YOU DO" type of question!
If you're not going to agree with people who are answering YOUR question...what's the point in asking it?
 
and Cesars got the only answer and will critique anyone who has a different opinion its pretty plain and simple. You gotta love it or leave it. Oh wait some have!

I am a believer in compensation. If I were put in a position where someone needed something from me at a event, I would charge also. I had a gig two years ago during the Christmas season, where a DJ in a room down the hall asked me if I had any holiday music. I said yes but it"s not on cd, but if you want I can burn you some songs to bail you out. The guy threw me a 20 spot and I slid him a cd with 20 holiday tracks on it. The money covered my time spent, cdr and not for the music (for you music police people on the board).

I also arrived at a gig and my roadie was running late (flat tire). I proceeded to unload and set up with the help of a bus boy that knows me from playing at this venue a few times a year. When I was done I gave him 30 bucks for helping me because he really didn't have too. He also saved me a ton of time.

John - Did you ask for the money first or did they offer it (like most here would) as a thank you? Just Curious.
 
If I ran into a jam like a broken microphone, blown speaker or what ever. I would have no problem paying another DJ a reasonable fee on the spot for a rental to get me through my event.
 
I say that for something so simple i just would have let him borrow it. I then would have looked to trade business cards with that DJ. You never know when you just may get a phone call from that DJ asking if you have a date open and someone is looking for a DJ just from doing a good deed. I seriously doubt if this DJ would walk away with a mic stand. It could happen but i doubt it.

Steve made a great point about this mic stand isn't a major item that if you don't know what you're doing you could damage something. Now if they asked to use a speaker or something like that then i would have told them no because if it gets damaged i doubt if they would be willing to get it fixed or replaced.

This reminds me of a time when a DJ was playing outside the housing complex where my partner lives at. He wanted to know if he could use our speakers along with what he had there. I didn't know the DJ and my attitude was he should have brought the right stuff to get the job done right. That's his problem. If i knew the DJ and we were good friends then i would have helped out. He wasn't going to use our speakers and possibly damage them. Only to say oh well. Not here.

I'm just curious what did you spend that $20.00 on? I bet it wasn't much. Maybe that was gas money so you could make it back home because you just didn't have enough due to not charging the client enough. LOL.

The 20 spot that I made was spent on White Castle for the ride home at 2AM. My wife wasn't too happy because I blew the bedroom up like a mother/father that night.
