After the JTR and Triple Eights video has anyone else said anything in this thread? canute did you say something? Thats some serious shit that would give my Dynacord stuff a serious run for the money.

Steve! I think their is a DJ selling a full QSC HPR package here that might fit the bill and save you a few bucks.

For something new I would grab a set of JBL SRX 715's while they are still available and a set of Yorkville LS 801's pb for the powered low end. Most events will only need one but at least you will have a 2nd unit in the arsenal for bigger events. The JBL's can be pushed by your biggest QSC amp you already have. Another set of passive 15's that I like are the EV ZX5's. As for the Yorkie subs, I have 2 and I load them by myself in my SUV with no problems.

The HPRs would probably fit the bill sound wise, but I think they're a bit heavy, especially the subs. The SRX715 are nice. The LS801pb are also too heavy (for me) at 135# ... I'm hoping I can get each component under 85#.

I heard really good things about the LS 608's. Maybe 2 of those would work? You already have the amps to push the tops and subs. I also like the the RCF 705 subs they sound nice coupled.

I see someone who has the ART 905AS for a similar price to the 705 .. do you know anything about those?

Steve,
this is only my opinion, but I would NOT get L1's and a different sub woofer. I've heard it a few times from other people and I think it sounds terrible. It certainly could have been them and maybe it's because I'm so used to the sound with the bass bins, but I think if someone doesn't like the sound of the L1's with the bass bins, they should look at other speakers. Better options if sub woofers are a must.

I have to agree with Scott on this if you are going to go Bose go all the way they are perfectly matched any other combo I have heard either wasn't enough Bass or way too much.

Have you thought about the Yorkville Paraline. I've heard them in store and a friend of mine uses them for SR on a regular basis and swears by them

I'm guessing price will be an issue with the Paraline .. same as the QSC K-Array .. I'd burn my budget on 2 tops, though they'd be sweet.

Never had a chance to hear the 905's. This weekend I will be heading into the city to tease myself with things that I can't afford. I will see if they have the 905 at Rock and Soul and I will ask to hear it.

Sounds good, let me know ... The 905 was $1239 at TMS Audio in Clinton, NY. , the 705 was $1256 at SonicFiber in Hackensack, NJ.

Yeah Steve probably I kind of forgot about the budget part. Up here in Canada it would be in the 7 Grand range for two tops and two subs

Other than what I have stated I don't have much to say. I am not a fan of powered speakers.
First, they can become heavier as there is an amp onboard.
Second, with two components (Amp & Speaker) in one cabinet, if one component on one side malfunctions the other component becomes useless, which also means that the other side would also have to be pulled(Unless everyone walk around with a spare sub and a spare top/mains. In essence it would be like pulling two speaker cabinets and two mono amps out of the line up for the sake of one malfunction.
Third, running two cables per cabinet, that can be challenging.
Fourth, unless they are within arms reach, to manually control or make adjustments becomes very inconvenient.
Fifth, for Outdoor use, both speaker and amp will be in the sun, whereas, if it was a passive rig, the speaker could be outside and the amps in a cooler envoirnment.
Sixth, it is easier to monitor peak levels from amps in a rack in the booth area versus peak lights being on where visibility can be null.
Seventh, to put both amp and speaker components in one cabinet has to come at a cost of some kind of compromise.

I am sure there are nice sounding powered speakers out there that will meet the needs for some but for what I do, I would much prefer a custom applied and more robust setup. If everything is on wheels, weight is a moot point!

That video is inconclusive. No sense of depth in the sound. Are JTR good speakers? Of course they are but not everything one sees on You Tube is believable. It could be just recorded for sensation.

Didn't you say you could buy equipment and feel confident by just reading the specs on the product?

Yes I did! I never said I would buy equipment given a demo like this. I can record a video with my camera phone and add a direct audio feed to it and tell everyone how wonderful the mike is on the phone. Whoever wants to believe that baloney is entirely up to them. My objection is not to the speaker, its specs and its standing in the audio world. It is the video with which i have an issue.

I'll trust the users including Scott.

I would too if I knew them. I have already identified flaws in the video and its recording but who am I to convince anyone on here, eh? I don't want to start another strain of attacks and defenses.

One JTR Orbit Shifter would eat four of those fancy Scoops. But I will settle for my Dynacords they havent failed the Trini Test.

Powered tops are definitely heavier, I agree.

The reason I bought powered speakers was the elimination of 1 more piece of equipment (amp). I figure if I lose 1, I still have another. If I lose an amp .. I'd have to bring a second amp, but it works fine for my Yorkvilles, so I may still go that way.

As for cables, I use a duo cables (XLR+power) .. works great. Once the level is set, all my changes are made at the mixer .. haven't had an issue in 5 years (including the previous Mackies). I haven't tried the JBLs in the sun yet, but the Mackies ran 8 hours in direct 90 degree sun, which is all I could ask for. The JBLs are passively cooled, so not sure if that's worse than the fan cooled Mackies.

I figure most high end systems (line arrays and such) have almost all moved to powered versions, so my only concern would be weight.

wow 5 lbs more for a powered speaker is miniscule really. 45 or 50 lbs wow a definite backbreaker deal breaker for sure.
