I love a good debate, and this one I really do need some perspective, as I moving more toward the world most of you play in and need help tailoring my system for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Much of my equipment has been a carry over from live sound work, which I am doing a lot less of late (some of the groups I have done have broken up or moved), so I am planning to re-build my equipment to focus primarily on sound playback and karaoke and live sound will be an accommodation as opposed to a focus.

I started earlier this year with replacing my Mackie SRM450s and a pair of JBL MP-215s with a pair of JBL PRX612ms. My larger system is a pair of Yorkville Unity U15Bs over a pair of Yorkville UCS1B subs, powered by 3 QSC amps (PLX3602, PLX3102 and PLX2502) and dedicated Yorkville processor/crossover. They sound phenomenal, but due to the design of the Unity horn, they take some 15+ feet from the speakers to get a complete coherent sound, which works wonderful in big venues, not so much for a dance floor. The subs are also getting a bit unwieldy for me, so I'd like a smaller package that I can move in my SUV (no tangents on trailers or vans please .. not in the cards) easier.

So, the plan would be to sell the Unity set and amps, and maybe some of the compressors, reverbs, mics, etc. and pick up probably a new set of smaller subs and a second set of tops for either large gigs or really small ones where the PRX612s don't have enough oomph, but I can't use a sub.

So .. what do I get, given a spend of maybe $4K-$5K for the speakers and subs .. and I haven't totally ruled out passive speakers yet?

To start this off, my current thinking is a pair of 15" 2 or 3 ways plus a set of 15" or 18" subs. So far, I have researched the QSC KW series, JBL PRX, JBL SRX, RCF subs, and the Danly TH-Mini subs. An interesting option that recently popped up would be a pair of Bose L1s over some bigger bass bins, though that's probably out of the price range.

If I had to divide it, I guess the budget would be $1200 a piece for each speaker or less. Looking to get modular.

I'm hoping for demostbackfriendly ..

L1 model 2's are on sale right now. For about $5800, you can have 2 Model 2's, 4 bass bins, and a T1 tone match mixer. I do mostly weddings and corporate parties and haven't had one in 6 years they couldn't handle.

The great thing is most events only need 1. Some disagree with me because of the stereo and they think having just one looks odd. But if the clients love it, I run in mono anyway, and it's much easier for me, I keep the 2nd one in the car for as back up. When I do use the 2nd one, I usually run it wireless to another side of the room. But I do love my 15 minute set ups.

Nothing weighs over 22lbs. and everything has handles.

Your back and your customers will love you.

Another great thing. If you don't like them....they'll take them back. 45 days return. They'll even do 12 months same as cash(for some of it).

Just one of many great choices you have.

I thought the K12's sounded excellent too.

I will go with the Bose System that Scott suggested. Get a laptop adapter cables and you are ready to go! ;)

Steve,
this is only my opinion, but I would NOT get L1's and a different sub woofer. I've heard it a few times from other people and I think it sounds terrible. It certainly could have been them and maybe it's because I'm so used to the sound with the bass bins, but I think if someone doesn't like the sound of the L1's with the bass bins, they should look at other speakers. Better options if sub woofers are a must.

I don't do wedding, mainly parties, reunions, birthday, etc. and karaoke, so there definitely needs to be a bass component. I will see if there is a Bose store close enough to really listen to them. But I would suspect, based on my limited experience with them, that I would prefer a bigger kick than the Bose Bass bins.

Steve you can choose your own bass bins and add it to these as tops http://www.bose.com/controller?even...sional/on_stage/loudspeakers/802_series_3.jsp In a two way configuration there is nothing to impede the Highs and Mids sent to them. the Subs you choose will do exactly what you want. You will have to use their controller AKA a 2 way crossover.

Take a look at the different Professional speakers to make a combination that suits your needs.

Yes the JTR Growler has gotten some nice reviews, but not sure where I would listen to them.

Steve,
I would call them and maybe they can put you in touch with a user in your area. The reviews seem to be off the chart.

But do they fit in the price range .. that would be key.

I think they're right there. If it wasn't such a problem to ship them down here I would've already spent a lot of money. I could have them shipped to my place in Houston and then drive down, but the way crime is rampant on our highways specially in Northern Mexico it's out of the question for the time being, but sooner or later I'll get my hands on some :D:D:D:D:D

Holy Crappola .. check this out:

Seen it, loved it. I'm telling you they're DA BOMB!!!!

Who in their right mind would use a pair like those ... and I will try to listen to them as well.
Those are the newer versions to what I have. The thing I like most is, as passive boxes used in a two way (mid & highs) whatever signal you send to them get gets reproduced without interference. In a three way mode I can have it double as either Tweeter section or Midrange section. Another thing is they have a nicer profile once up in the air versus the regular vertical rectangular boxes. Anyways, to each his own.
