Hi all - Dan, 50. I have been a musician for 35 years and a dj for the last 22 years. Just did a community pool party last night, alot of preteens and teens. I think events such as these help me think "younger" and stay in touch with the younger generations. Then I get to do a 50th wedding anniversary where I get to revisit some of my youth and play those great oldies. As in life itself, it's that "balance" that keeps my dj life rich and very rewarding. I plan to keep on with it as long as I can.
So, who are the "old guys" in the forum?

I don't think it's the healthcare system as much as it's the entitlement mentality that's killing us. Somehow we've gotten to the point where half the people believe they deserve what the other half worked for and intend on getting the government to make it happen for them.

As old as my tongue, but older than my teeth… been DJ’ing since 82.

Just turned 54 in May. Not so much a DJ yet, I sing to backing tracks/karaoke tracks at the local ELKs, VFWs, American Legions, manufactured home communities, retirement communities and other venues. Looking to get more into DJing doing weddings, sweet 16s and other events. I dye my hair so I look a lot younger than I would if I didn't. Takes around 10-15 years off so I look like I'm in my 40s(IMO) instead of in my 60s. We have a large number of retired people in this area and I specialize in the oldies, but the plan is to branch out into other genres and more contemporary music themed events which pay better.

Been learning about music and audio gear and how to perform and other things for the last 5 years and really started doing shows mid 2008. Learned a lot here and at DJChat and at the Karaoke Scene, plus general research on the internet.
I'm kind of old, but mentally I'm still young at heart and interested in learning and developing myself.
I like all kinds of music from country to rap to disco, funk, pop, blues, rock-n-roll, latin, techno, reggae-pretty much everything.

My first DJ job ever was spinning clay tablets for Moses. First professional (paid) job was May, 1978. Full-time solo op since November, 1984. Atypical slow year this year (2012) with only 40 weddings/parties on the books (totally out of the karaoke or club jobs ten years ago). Will turn 69 this December. Don't feel it, don't look it, stay in reasonably good shape, possess the Peter Pan chromosome and the Dick Clark gene, and have a gorgeous, sexy wife of 14 years who is a year younger than my son.

I have always thought that the question meant being in the business professionally. I see some replies which puts the person answering as young as 12-14 starting professional, LOL.
I have always given the date as when I started professionally in the Business as 1978. I bought a complete Club Sound System at that time, 3 way Electronic crossover, tri amped with all the other processing to go along with it. From then til now it has been 36 years. If I did like some and added the years where I did house and community parties (I got paid for many of those too) , before treating it as Business, it will go back to when I was 16 years old, 1966 = 12 years. Add the two and there is a total of 48 years.
