Why do some put down others for not being a computer DJ?

I love using my cd players as a digital controller. I had them since I was using cd's and it also saved me money from buying a new controller. I love using my turntables as a controller as well. Still did not spend money because the tt'sbeen with me since 2001. Now if I had to spend money on something new today, it would not be on any of these toy looking controllers.

I like and can do it however I need to. I can use normal turntables, digital turntables, controllers, normal CD players, cassette, etc. My current fav is Serato Itch with the VCI 300 controller. I always have my CD players at the ready tho.

If the guests at an event are looking at the DJ, then it's not a good event (in fact, it's boring). The guests should be involved with other guests -- chatting, dancing, whatever.
I was looking back at my wedding video the other day (I do that once in a while, so I remember why I'll never get married again)
Anyway, the DJ (my mentor's mentor), set up a small table in the corner, where he was essentially out of site. He was spinning vinyl, sitting down, and had a mic in front of him. His MC duties were fantastic, his choice of music was great. The crowd was engaged the entire evening, and most didn't even know where he was.
I don't need to look at the DJ -- he/she just has to do their job, and I don't care how they do it. If you wanna be a rock star, buy a guitar, learn how to play it, write a couple hit songs, and go on tour...

What is so wrong for a DJ to be seen? As long as he is not unnecessarily drawing attention to himself I see no problem in the DJ being seen? When did all this start? It used to be that at a Venue for a Wedding the DJ and his setup was given a prominent place just as the B & G Wedding Party got a prominent Table, usually across from the DJ/Stage with the dance floor in between them.
Was this all a product of the Venue Managers deeming DJs as insignificant and thus relegating them to the proverbial corner? I also remember that the DJ and his setup were also photographed along with photos of the guests. What became of that practice? Doesn't the DJ get a reserved seat at a table anymore? I clearly remember, if it was buffet style, the DJ being ushered to get his place in line early since he had to eat fast enough so he can perform his duties. Times must really be changing...at least for some of you all! LOL

For me, its the perception. I dont think I would feel comfortable infront of my booth with only a laptop. I choose to have some toys laid out infront of me. I will be getting a laptop and running the Numark Mixdeck (thanks DJ~eZ) with it.

Holy cow! He must carry a whole lotta 45's. I went kicking and screaming into the digital age. In fact, I didn't fully go digital until last year, and never looked back. I have a feelng that most of the folks here could care less about the medium you use, only that you do your best with what use.
Me too. My partner kept pushing me to go digital and I kept saying no way. I'll stick with my cd's. I was afraid of the horror stories I heard about a program crashing and messing up the event. The best thing to me was to finally go digital and I haven't looked back since too.
I've had more cd's glitch up, then I've had with laptops and I've been laptop based since 2006. Cassettes, on the other hand, nary a issue
Yea I remember the cassette days. Definitely more of a pain than any other media so far.
You definitely had to be prepared; the company i worked for just gave you two decks; I brought 2 extra. Their decks didn't have auto scan (find the dead air between the tracks). I always kept about 8 12 song pre-cued in the event I didn't have time to fnd the track I was looking for. In those days you truly worked during a gig.
