Why do some put down others for not being a computer DJ?

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!

I'm asking this question because i've seen on this and other forums like this where some DJs don't really consider a DJ a real DJ or take them seriously if they are not using a computer. What's the big deal? As long as they can get the job done and they satisfy the client and their guest why does it matter.

I find it's more conveniet to be able to use my laptop and external HD
 
Don't worry about what other DJs think. The only one that matters in the end is your client.

Many years ago, I had some purist DJs give me crap when I made the transfer to CDs from vinyl.
 
It's all about what talent you have - not the method.

Give me Picasso with crayons instead of a child with oil paints.
 
Actually I find it the other way around the vinyl and CD dj's think us computer dj's are button pushers.

What I find amusing about this whole thing, is the controller freaks...

You put the music on a computer, then use a CD type controller. o_O

To me, that sorta defeats the whole purpose of using a computer. You've already got a keyboard on the computer that will do anything you want, plus a mouse and/or trackball.

Because that mouse/trackball will not give that "hands on" feel like a controller. I can't click a mouse with the speed and precision that I can use a controller.

Opposite here.

I've been using a keyboard since the 70's, and a mouse since Windows first came out, so it's easy for me. I also have one less piece of gear to carry and worry about breaking. My software is mapped to my keyboard, just the way I want it. So, basically I can take my laptop, plug into any PA, and am ready to go :)

This is why I am really liking my Pioneer MEP 7000, add a keyboard and Monitor/TV, plug in your hard drive and there really is no need for the Computer. I hardly touched the laptop Saturday night!

The MEP can read your Folders in your Hard Drive. It can search for songs by artists, genres etc depending on your tags. You can make specific Playlists and save them in whatever sequence you desire.
 
Looks like I started the wrong thread. This thread has turned in to what type of computer DJ are you and who is better because of what they. You use what's most comfortable to you that will help you get the job done right.

It look like to me more DJs should be upset now that DJing is being done with computers. Since there have been so many newbies coming into DJing with a computer a lot of under cutting has gone. It's like a race to the bottom. Let's see who can get there first. The computer has cut down on a lot of the cost for a DJ to get started. Even with a DJ using cd's the cost was a lot more. You had to buy the cd's and then spend money on a book to put them in.
 
Mix - I'm sure at one point there was arguments over a "real" writer should use a computer. The goal is the story. Make the people happy and it really doesn't matter whether you're spinning vinyl, plastic or electrons.
 
I can see your point but if the DJ is doing it right like most here on this board then they have payed for all the music they have in their library.It is easy for someone to get music illegally and be able to offer their services cheaper due to the lesser investment they have but I choose to do it the right way. I am a computer DJ but it is all a matter of what works for you. I have all the reciepts for the music I have downloaded and all the CDs for the music I have on my laptops and carry them with me to every gig but the stay in my trailer and I just have them as backup. I like having a small footprint in case you get to a gig and the room is set up different than when you did your site visit and when I was using CDs it took up a lot more room but once again it is all about pleasing you client and if you make then happy then you did your job.

Just curious, what would you consider a "Small Footprint to be?" Floor area please.....Booth? Tripods/Speakers?

No need to hi-jack the thread.

If you have a system that works for you, you get no complaints, your clients are happy, and you're making the money you want... just keep doing it and do not worry about the naysayers.
 
I Posted a thread about my new booth on here a few weeks ago http://www.ourdjtalk.com/threads/new-dj-booth.44251/#post-502585 and the size is 60" long by 30" deep so my footprint without lighting would be about 6' x 5'. plus the speakers on each side. If I am using my lighting my truss is 10' and the base is around 12-13' and I kind of intertwine my lighting stands and speaker stands. My contract calls for a 12x 6 area to set up in but sometimes when you get there things are different than you discussed and you need to adapt to make it work. Once again to each his/her own use what works for you and your customers
 
Mix - laptops and PC's at a gig aren't the problem. Don't most dual cd players read burned cd-r's. There was nothing stopping the hack from taking all of that illegally gotten music and burn it to cd's. Heck I remmeber a multi op in Winnipeg taking cd's and copying them to 24 libraries of cassettes; one for each of his shows.

This isn't a new problem. We should have never gotten away from vinyl.....
 
Who cares what other DJ's think? YOU got the gig! Many times folks have walked up to me and said: "Hey man! I'm a DJ too!"

We have a DJ around here that does oldies shows and only uses 45s .. part of the schtick. Just remember, a lot of folks don't know what vinyl is, and many are so enamored with the cute tricks you can do with a PC, that they forget the real reason people come back and that's the music.
