What speaker tops did you buy and why?

I'm making this thread because I hate that the one about paying off credit turned into a thing about the speakers I bought.

Please let's act like adults here. Be kind with what you post on this thread. No putting down anybody for what they bought. Also please keep in mind that not everyone here is a polished professional that has been a DJ for 10 years or more. There maybe a DJ on here just starting out.

Myself I bought a pair of QSC K12.2 speakers. I bought those speakers for several reasons. First 2 friends of mine have those speakers. 1 has 8 of those speakers and another DJ friend has 4. They are either the original version or the upgrade ones.

Another reason is I heard them and they sound great! I watched a bunch of YouTube videos on them and everyone who gave a review were in favor of a DJ buying those speakers. Some had little things that they didn't like here and there but nothing to be concerned about.

Another reason why I bought those speakers are because I love the cabnet they put the components in. It's made of really great hard solid plastic. Not like the original Mackie Thumps my partner bought years ago. Also the weight for those speakers are not bad which is very important for me because I'm 68 years old. They are not the lightest speakers on market but they are not boat anchors.

Another great thing about those speakers is they have plenty of wattage with those speakers. One big lesson I learned is that you can never have to much but you can have not enough for an event. You can adjust the sound if it's too much. What I've witnessed is a DJ using a pair of speakers that don't have enough wattage for the event they are doing. The room they are in is too large for the speakers they are using. Now to make up for that they will try to compensate by pushing the speakers beyond its limits and possibly damaging the speakers which in return can mean doing one of 3 things. Either take the speakers to a repair shop, fix it yourself or buy more speakers. One of the best lessons I ever learned is to buy once and forget it. In other words buy the right speakers if you can afford them and be done with buying cheaper speakers just to get by with.

Now to be fair some just starting out may not know a really high quality speaker vs one that's not that good of a speaker. They may look at the price and buy the speakers because of the low price instead of something costing more money.

So I bought those QSC K12.2 speakers because I know they sound great and are very reliable.

I also bought those speakers because I knew eventually we would be asked to come back and do the event in Branch Brook Park again. So to cover the event with a system good enough for that event in the park I decided on the QSC K12.2 speakers and so far I have no complaints about those speakers.

Again please be kind with your post and remember some DJs on here are just starting out and are not the serious professionals that others on here are.

I always have a variety of speakers different purposes there is no 1 size fits all solution. That being said if I lived in a major metropolitan area, I would have a set that was a fit for most of the gigs I do and rent when I needed bigger, there is no point in buying speakers for a once a year event.
If the majority of my gigs were small events for the seniors or similar I would have small easy to transport speakers or more likely 1 speaker. I buy for purpose not for ego. I also don’t repeatedly ask a group of the same people on the internet to justify my purchase repeatedly

There you go with your BS! I said be nice and tell us what speakers do you use for tops and why did you buy them.? That's it. You mentioned nothing about any of the speakers you bought. What happened to the part where I said this thread might help a newbie? Nothing you said does any of those things!

I said I had a variety for different purposes, because one size doesn’t fit all.

No one is really focusing on the speakers you bought... rather how you paid for them. That's the irresponsible part. Now could you make an argument for only needed 8" speakers for the events you do... different story.

And to make you happy, like tunes, I have different speakers for different needs:

Main System (BIG room)
2- RCF nxl24

Main System Small Room/After Party System

Large Ceremony System or Simple No Dancing Event

Like the others, I have a variety of speakers. My mains for larger (for me that is) events is my old 15" 2-way Yamaha MS-400s, It was a great sounding but short-lived offering because it was late to the market, heavy and not priced competitively. I still get compliments on their sound though. Now that I do mostly smaller gigs, these come out only about twice a year.

My next go-to speakers are my passive 8" 2-way EV-ZX1s. I like having at least a pair of passives in my inventory as it reduces my cabling needs. These are pretty light and sound decent.

My most recent addition is the QSC CB10 battery powered speaker. I have used it three times this month alone. It is one of the loudest battery speakers on the market. It isn't perfect. I wish it had at least one more input, more DSP power, USB power port and custom fitted bag (I use a K10 bag). Nevertheless, it has become my go-to speaker for charity events that need a mic and some background music. I may get a second one if I can figure out a place to store it.

I also have 3x JBL EON Compacts 8-inch battery powered speakers. I love the packaging, feature set, weight and built-in mixer. I use these when bringing karaoke to a friend's home. I wish the QSC had a similar feature set. The down-side of these JBLs is that they are not very loud. I got an amazing deal on these so I won't complain too much.

I have a few other powered options that almost never get used these days. I have a 10" 2-way that last got used as a drum fill monitor about 3 years ago. I may get rid of this so I have room for another CB10. I also still have a 6.5" powered monitor that is mic-stand mountable. I bought it for karaoke monitoring initially but I can't remember the last time I actually used it.

I had considered getting a set of wide dispersion speakers like QSC KC12s or EV Evolve 30Ms as I don't have any wide dispersion stuff in my inventory. Neither the QSC or EV perfectly match what I am looking for though. The QSC gets way louder than I need but weighs more than my Yamahas. The EVs have a nice built-in mixer and weigh only 44 lbs but are only rated to 123dB. I am hoping to see QSC produce a smaller column speaker. I would gladly settle for about 6 dB lower output for a weight savings of 10-15 lbs. Maybe they will surprise me at next year's NAMM.

You are right. No argument there.

Let me explain what I did. I didn't have any tops to use and I already had my mind made up what I wanted to buy without giving it a second thought. QSC K 12.2. I already explained why I bought them. Now on to what I did to get them. I had an old GC credit card. I tried to use that card to buy the speakers and was told I could no longer use that card. So I was offered another card to get the speakers and it was approved. I was excited to be told that I would get the speakers in a few days. I made the mistake of not asking how much the interest on that card was. All I knew was I was not ready to retire from DJing. I got the speakers in less than a week. I let my excitement get the best of me. I didn't have the money in my account to buy the speakers that way unless I use the rent money to buy them. I wasn't going to do such a crazy thing. So I used a CC instead. I admit I made the mistake of agreeing to buy the speakers with that card. Lesson learned.

Now about me buying those speakers instead of some other speakers that would work ok and be cheaper, I wasn't interested in saving money buying some mediocre speakers to use. I wanted a pair of speakers that are the REAL DEAL!

Now as far as using those speakers at events, they are the only tops I have to use. So I don't have the luxury some on here have. When using the speakers it's about knowing how to use them for the event I'm doing. I decided on those speakers because when I need to crank up the sound I don't have to worry about damaging them. Now I know 2 ways to control the volume coming from the speakers. I don't use a mixing board with my regular setup. I do 2 things to set the proper volume at an event. First I use the master volume on the controller and set it to desired volume for the event. Next I can use the slides. I use channel 2 and 3 to do my regular DJing. I adjust the slides which in turn when you move the slides up or down the levels on VDJ will move. I leave the slides where they are and use the crossfader to mix with or to go from 1 channel to the other when I'm just playinng one song after another and not mixing songs in.

So again it's about knowing what do with what you're using. Some events you don't need to blast the music and others you do. I just wanted a speakers that if I need to crank up the volume they wouldn't sound harsh or distorted.
