I need 4 that are easy to operate being that I have zero expierence in lights.

DMX I heard is very hard to learn/program.

Anyone have any advise? Also, are there classes to take on this stuff?

Thank you

Heads really need dmx control. I use chauvet showxpress 512. You can just let them run in auto or sound active. As for classes, what are your demographics? Also what is your budget for heads? Being that you need/want 4 your budget would help.

Well I dont have a computer, so I need a computer to run moving heads? Sorry I sound so stupid, I know nothing about this stuff...

I can be flexable on the budget. I just want good lights. The Martin 250's are cool, but just to expensive for me...I do small/medium gigs.

So not top of the line I guess, but I dont want cheap lights that will break on me.

Thx J

Cheap or expensive does not mean good or bad. Road cases will save them for the most part from breaking. You can run a dmx operator or something like that to move them around and makes scenes with basic chases. It will also give the ability to pick auto and sound internal programs. Chauvet and American DJ both offer great choices that are affordable. I do not run top of the line lighting and I will be the first one to say it. Very very nice...wow. Uplighting really is a nice touch.

From the research I have done, THESE are the best bang for the tight budget. They are a moving head but wash only...no gobos. Good reviews on these.

I had them for a day and sent them back. You get what you pay for in this instance. Real crap in my opinion. Qspot led 150 chauvet are nice and reliable and cheap. It is what ever you want to pay. If you can get money for a bigger show than go big. If your market is under 1k than by all means keep it simple

You could just run them sound activated or on one of their internal programs. The down side to both of those options is you will have no control over them. If you purchased a basic controller and ran them in a basic mode you would have some controls and be able to select sound active etc.

Here is the gear list for a simple 4 head show.

Chauvet 4 intimidator spot 250 LED heads 599.99 ea.
Chauvet obey40 controller - 115.00
4 25' dmx cables - ebay. Im sure cheap
some power cords and go.

Sorry I meant qspot 250 leds not 150s. :)

Thx J for your input!

I was just checking out the obey40 controller and for a rookie, its just a little overwhelming.

So are scanners less money? Are they easier to control? If I went with scanners, which ones are good? I want LED for sure. Thanks again J. I really appreciate your help with this stuff...

Scanners are easier to just let run because they just face forward. I actuall like them. Errrr for mobile work. My market likes big light though unfortunately. Chauvet intimidator Scan 300 led is my choice right now. Super bright and built like a tank. About 2400 for 4

I like scanners too. Alas, they are another tool in the toolbox. Moving heads / scanners each have their own benefits. They're both cool.

That is absolutely kick-$ss lighting. Kudos to you, my man.

Jay - You should change the "favicon" (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon ) on your site (the little icon that shows up on the left of the address bar and also in your bookmarks if you bookmark it). It appears to be the Apple logo .. If you need it, you can make one from any logo with this tool and place it on your web server.

Thanks. I appreceiate the nice comments. Check out my site if you want more photos of the type of stuff I do. www.agesevents.com :) or find me on facebook for even more photos. My site and fb are linked
Thanks Jay. My forum friend, you are "gettin er done". I've been needing a good, swift kick in the seat of the pants and this is definitely it.

Knowing what DMX equipment to purchase, depends on many factors. Your budget, your wish for how you want your set up to look, and what you wish to accomplish. Scanners and moving heads do "sort of" the same things at different speeds and different directions. Scanners are limited to about 160 degrees from side to side, and about 90 degrees top to bottom. A moving head will cover anywhere in the room, but get to that spot a little slower.

If you are doing small weddings, then the cost should be ABOUT $200 to $400 for a good basic scanner and about $100 more for a moving head. Don't go with less than 250 watts... you won't be happy. High end fixtures run a few hundred more.

I know of a guy who can teach you how to program like a pro in two days or less.
