What would make you quit DJing?

Wow. That's a really narcissistic view of the world. I think the demand for "clean radio edits" probably exceeds one DJ in PA. LOL!

It's like your whole view of DJs is based on one day spent with a group of carnival workers. Is this really your view of things or just a dig at me personally that to succeed full time I must also be ethically inferior?

Plain and simple, the person doing the greatest share of quality business generates the higheest level of referrals. More referrals means more opportunity to choose quality gigs. It follows quite obviously that the more part time or casual a DJ becomes - the harder it is to find qualified customers.

You may be dropping a lot of prospects you find undesirable - but, that does not mean that they are being picked up by desperate and morally corrupt full timers. More than likely, they are flocking to novices and bargain DJs even more casual and part time than yourself.

You say narcissistic, and I say, oh well. I like the way I do business. I get all the business I want, so I'm happy.

EDIT, I think you are looking way too hard trying to make something out of nothing. Let everybody in the wold who owns a business run it the way they choose. I'm not trying to slap anybody down.

Cue up Ozzy - See You on the other Side!!!

If yer on the Highway to Hell, with me, Mick, Keith and Angus -- then we will hook up... :)

If yer going to the other place, they have no outlets, and all you get is harp music, and Beiber virgins... :D)

Bob, Proformance, is one of the most honest, hard working, and business minded entertainers I have ever met on this or any board. I say entertainer because that is what he does; uses music as entertainment rather than just DJing. Through this he has generated repeat business and that is something I've only really seen a few DJs do. Oh yeah, some may have the one or two regular clients but most go for the one time client and that is it.

Now, that being said, my emphasis was on the wedding market and that is mostly one time with the rest being derived from referrals. There is nothing wrong with that unless you are in a glutted market; that is, glutted with DJs. I am. Also, you can't use music as entertainment at a wedding except in spurts, if you are lucky.

I would have loved to be where Bob is but the only way to really get there is full time. I was never ready to commit with that because I have a fairly stable job.

Kirby said: "When it is no longer enjoyable and there is no profit." It did reach that point for me. For all the reasons I stated at the beginning it was not enjoyable anymore. Because of the glut of DJs here there is no profit for the weekend warrior. So, time to stop.

I echo proformance of Boston, each one is a challenge, oh yes there is a butt for every stool, but its my job to leave them with a smile ,i have been dj'ing almost 30 years, and dont plan on quitting for a long time, I try to find my gigs half full on the glass . It's how we handle it as professionals and the end result. Each gig i learn something new about people and life in general,, happy gigs to you all,,,

Agreed.

I've been doing this for over 38 years and haven't found the reason yet. LOL Not that I'm looking for one!

Agreed.

When it is no longer enjoyable and there is no profit.

Somewhat agreed - can't see this happening as of yet.

I'm dead!!!

Agreed.

Conflicting personal or professional responsibilities.

Agreed - again, can't see this happening.

I'm also one of the longer timer's - it'll be 24 years in August. I love it. You have to take the good with the bad - like anything else in life. If the rest of the ride will be like the first 23+ years, then when they pry it from my cold dead hands.

=)

Well, I will *never* hangup my headphones unless I am either dead or dying. But then, everyone of us is dying - just slowly. ;)

When the time comes for me to slow down, I will simply drop all paid advertisements both web and in print. And maybe reign in other spending.

Never, will I sell my current gear, music library, or other investments. I will always keep up with music subscriptions and insurance. As long as I can earn enough to cover the basic basics w/o advertising, I will be happy.

Might even rent small systems.

Post DJ plans might include running live sound for churches or small groups/corporate events.

My reasons, in no particular order:

  • Tired of humping the gear around.
  • Tired of busting my butt to get gigs.
  • Tired of spending my weekends away from my family.
  • Tired of putting up with the assholes that are sometimes (most of the time) clients.
  • Tired of playing music that I don't like and don't care to try to like.
  • Tired of putting up with the idiot guests of the asshole clients.
  • Tired of putting up with idiot wedding coordinators.
  • Tired of putting up with idiot hall managers.
For me it will be:
Heavy Speakers.
Too Much Gear::trirolleyes:
Guests wanting me to NOT eat with other Vendors.
Guests Not wanting me to help them with room arrangement and DJ setup location.:trirolleyes:

Seriously, I have to wonder about some on the Board. Complain complain complain is what i hear many a times. If you treat this as a business and not as a Hobby, you will see how much opportunity there is to not only make good money but have better control of your free time. Choose when, where and how you want to work.
I have learned over the years how to get what I want so that I won't have to complain afterwards. Reading Motivation Books and going to Business Seminars and Training will give you those skills. 9 out of ten times at an event, I have a reserved seat at a table near my gear if I am going to eat. Learning to give so I can get. Highlighting the high points in someone/something and minimizing the negatives so they can be overcome.
How many on here take the time to sign up for Electronic Courses online so they can learn more about their gear. Folks, thats an Investment not a Cost.
There will always be a target market for me, even if it means the time will come where i will be the Resident DJ in the Retirement Home where I'll be staying.

I don't know, I'm thinking Tom believed the world would end Saturday, that's why he got rid of the equipment, not selling but donating which = Brownie Points upstairs :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

He was told that they only play Harps, Flutes and Trumpets up in da sky! yorofl:

The day I find myself searching the music while simultaneously looking for my teeth - I will give it up.

My reasons, in no particular order:

  • Tired of humping the gear around. (not me thats what Roadies are paid for)
  • Tired of busting my butt to get gigs. (if I dont work now thats fine because been 34+ years so far so slowing down looks better to me)
  • Tired of spending my weekends away from my family. (I'm not married so dont have to worry)
  • Tired of putting up with the assholes that are sometimes (most of the time) clients. (you get that with any Client but that should be a reason to Quit)
  • Tired of playing music that I don't like and don't care to try to like. (thats because you listen to one type of music and dont open up to all types of music)
  • Tired of putting up with the idiot guests of the asshole clients. (guests are again like clients you take it as you go no matter what profession your in!)
  • Tired of putting up with idiot wedding coordinators. (I dont deal with them so its a non issue)
  • Tired of putting up with idiot hall managers. (then I blacklist that hall/venue later and never go back - thats when I do not Reccomemd the venue bad for the venue in the long run!)

see my replies in RED

have a nice day

That's a good question. I think I just fell into it and got bitten by the bug. I can remember helping out at the roller skating rinks, then helping out at car shows, etc, etc. I've been involved with music in one form or another since I was in 4th grade.

Lets go back to the reason we started DJ'ing, what are your reasons for that!!!!

Sex, drugs, rock and roll, money and beer -- not necessarily in any particular order...
