Congrats, Tyrone. We just self-published my wife's first book about a month ago. Have you also checked into lulu.com (ittunes and barnesandnoble)? We've got product on itunes but still waiting for it to hit barnesandnoble.

(edit: oops, just went back an checked and it's hit barnesandnoble, albeit without the cover graphic.)

The 2nd book is more of a "How to Be a Professional DJ" book....... I wrote the chapter on children's entertainment / bubble parties.
 
Can I ask how one 'self publishes' a book? I'm not being ignorant - I'm totally new to that whole logic.

Basically you write it, then have it formatted for Kindle ( or nook ) and have it on sale at amazon. They take a cut, you get a cut.

BTW, the software "WriteWay Pro" Will format your book for Kindle. The new version that is.

We just did this for my wife's book. I'll give you a quick rundown of our experience.

She wrote it in Microsoft Word. The only "tricks" were to highlight and tag each chapter as a header and the book's title line as a title. She created a .jpg graphic as a cover. That's it. The book requires an ISBN. You can give away your publishing and amazon will give you a free ISBN. We chose to pay $180 and got a batch of 5 ISBNs. I don't remember the site. This got her book amazon (kindle).

For iBooks and Nook (Barnes and Noble) you have to submit through a 3rd party. We used Lulu.com. They were a bit more strict that amazon on formatting. Amazon let us get away without formatting chapter and book titles (which we later did and re-submitted) but Lulu bounced it. It took about a week to submit, wait for the bounce, make fixes, then re-submit. We finally got it on ibooks in about 2 weeks and barnesandnoble took about 3.

We're about 5 weeks into it and she's got maybe 15 book sales. Here's her book:

I've had the book on my computer for about 6 years. I keep updating it with better explanations and pictures are added regularly, that are better explanations of what I'm trying to convey. I then saved it in pdf format. Once I got onto Amazon.com, I was able to upload it either in "word" or "pdf" formats. I had that done and it was published within a half hour. Now, the downside... They don't pay you, until you have at least $100 in sales coming to you in royalties. I chose the 35% option, so I might not ever get paid...

The second book that Chuck is talking about, is the one I wrote two years ago... "HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL DJ". I had several professional contributers add to that (one of whom was Chuck, with his "Bubble Party" contribution). Let's see if I can get a royalty check on this first book, before I upload the second one.

By giving away the publishing, what does that do?

How do you choose to get paid? 35% of each book goes to you? Does that number change if you gave up the publishing?

So I could write a small novel tonight, PDF it, upload it to amazon, get a ISBN, and sell it? Is that the path? Who determines price? How do you 'market' it? Does that help sell it better?
