Finally!! We may see 24 bit, high-fidelity downloads!

CD quality still isn't how music is supposed to sound, imo. That's why high-grain vinyl still rules in the audiophile world. You hear everything. I guess if you don't know what you are missing then CD quality is acceptable.

Problem I have with this whole issue, is noise floor...

I have a very nice setup in the Man Cave, using the HRT DAC, and WAVs sound fantastic -- it's better than my high end CD player.

Here's where the problem comes in:

I have the room designed to listen to music, and I can hear the difference on a 24 bit file, versus a 16 bit file. But it's a subtle difference, that takes a good system all the way through, to hear it.

As the dude was mentioning in the video Gaffle posted, the entire system, from source to end point, has to be good. If you skimp anywhere, it ruins the entire chain.

Then, the listening area has to have certain traits, that allow the listener to hear the music, as it was recorded.

Neither of those criteria is met at your basic DJ gig! In fact, I would say the MP3s actually work great in most DJ scenarios. The compression (on the mastering end) they are using on most recordings these days, even helps for DJ work, IMHO.

On the other hand, I don't listen to that crap in the Man Cave... ;) :)

Personally speaking, I think we've been settling for "good enough" for too long! What happened to the United States that develops and uses the BEST ! Audio today sucks!
I have never liked CD's, I definitely do not like mp3's, to my ear it's loud harsh lifeless crap with no character or nuance, just annoying artifacts.

I say we go back to 'reel-to-reel'!

Analog Reel to Reel Masters from about 1980 to about 1985 were the peak of audio fidelity in my book, decent signal to noise, low distortion, great frequency response and no annoying digital artifacts from layer upon layer of digital processing. Engineers and producers KNEW how to get the best out of equipment and performer without the use of black box trickery to fix it in the mix.

Today's main problem is we have very few engineers left who know what good clean audio should sound like. Today's recording engineers only know loud, the latest audio gimmicks to cover up for bad mixes and poor talent, and how to be fast and cheap. Quality??? what quality!

Bout time... now if they would only get these overzealous/overloud mastering "engineers" to stop making the tracks so compressed and loud.

It's not the engineers. The engineers made a lousy product because they were told to by the producer.

That's why high-grain vinyl still rules in the audiophile world. You hear everything.

Audiophiles are people who listen to equipment, not music. :tritongue:

But seriously, the things that drive audiophiles to part with $$$ are beyond me.

SACD was a nice format...if the difference from 16bit to 24bit is anything like the difference from CD to SACD, I'm for it. (Even though it will be YEARS before I upgrade my full signal chain to be able to take advantage of 24 bit sound.)

Today's main problem is we have very few engineers left who know what good clean audio should sound like. Today's recording engineers only know loud, the latest audio gimmicks to cover up for bad mixes and poor talent, and how to be fast and cheap. Quality??? what quality!

Again...it's not the engineers. It's the producers, and in some cases even the artists. The loudness war could stop tomorrow if the artists really wanted to put our an album that had actual dynamic range.

Heck, most of the time I listen with the volume on about "2"...I have LOTS of room to make music louder on my end of the system.

I agree to a certain extent. I consider myself part of that group.

But, to be able to listen to equipment properly, you first need to establish a reference point for yourself.

One you establish that, it can't be changed with ease. It is your ears and brain that established that reference point.

But seriously, the things that drive audiophiles to part with $$$ are beyond me.

Pure fun, the art of tinkering :)

Some people spend money going out to dinner at fancy restaurants, some go to Broadway plays, some go skiing, some buy yachts, etc.

I buy speaker cables, amps, tubes, and spend every night repositioning my speakers :)

This is so very accurate.

While the dude in the video is technically correct - he is arrogantly ill-informed about why customers are in the club in the first place.

People make their preferences known with their wallets and their feet - not their ears.

We all understand the reality of the MP3. What he does not seem to understand is that the purpose for which the DJ is there is something other than perfect audio quality.

oh god here we go again, mine is better than yours debate

look a client can NOT tell what your using in a LOUD club with 500 people
drunk, talking, trying to sing, and all the background noise going on

oh thats right one will come into a club and make this statement

"Hey this crap isnt 320k @ 24bit sound lets go someplace it is"

what a load of crap

I would love to off a huge amount of money to set up in the USA
(as I have already done here at the UNI of WA 15 years ago)

a Club to show that maybe one person out of say 500 could tell 2% of whats playing

where there is so much noise while the dj is playing , people talking, being drunk falling over in front of you

that you wouldnt have a real clue what the sound quality is and even what MEDIUM was....
that includes using 8-track, reel to reel, cassettes, records (here you would if the records scratched) CDs, and including mp3's

NOT ONE PERSONS EAR, CAN DISTINGUSH FROM WHAT TYPE OF MEDIUM IS PLAYED PERIOD!! - WHAT SO EVER

and dont act big and say you can, because you havent done this sort of experiment before

I have and thats why I am saying it should be done AGAIN to show what the real difference is!!!

have a nice day!
