Zac,
Can you try and reproduce the error at a place with an available WiFi connection?

Thanx for the info Zac :)

I just went back and tried it again, and the error message is displayed through Rockit's own internal error processing. There is no Cancel button.

If you got a message with a Cancel button, it's coming from outside Rockit (perhaps a network driver error).

That gives me a little more to go on...

It may have said "OK"... I could be wrong...

I'm playing with it now and will kill the WIFI connection once I reset it to look for the internet lookup...

Of course, now everything is fine... I keep getting the error message, and it just keeps playing as advertised... It seems at the time that the message kept popping up multiple times in succession before shutting down. This was after having WIFI connection for about an hour, and them losing it.

Here at the house everything is fine...

The same thing would happen to me...sometimes it would shut down, sometimes not. :trisad:

Zac,

Just taking a guess here...

If you were running in AutoMix, and perhaps the error occurred for a number of songs in a row, and the error messages were hidden behind the main window -- that it finally got a buffer overrun, and crashed from too many error windows open.

I'll try and duplicate that scenario...

The other possible scenario I can see, is that some of the files in the mix were moved from their original locations. If that's the case, Rockit will bounce right to the next song in the wait list, because it can't find the song in it's original place. That could cause a series of errors to occur, that might not be recoverable from...

Rick - My guess is that this is EXACTLY what happened. There were several windows open with the error message, and I believe you are probably right. Once I switched off the feature where Rockit looks on the net for album art info, I had no problems at all...

I still need to work out how to use the DN2500 as a controller...

Zac,
May I suggest you turn off WiFi, Blue Tooth, etc. at a gig? While Rick's program does not consume a lot of resources you reduce the risk of conflicts in applications. I'm using VDJ but the laptops are exclusive for this and don't see the internet at all so I have never had a problem with them.

No worries with Rockit Jacob -- it's designed and built on machines always connected, with all sorts of sh_t running.

On the other hand, if that stuff is not fine tuned, and the machine itself (Windows) is having issues, then as you say, it will effect everything...

I always recommend to folks, that when they buy a new off the shelf machine, they immediately wipe the hard drive, and install a fresh RETAIL copy of Windows, and the minimal driver set. That's the only true way to get a clean machine.

OEM copies cannot be easily moved to another machine without hacking -- retail copies can. Spend the extra few bucks, just like you would on speakers :)

OOOOOOOOooooooooo the big bad internet..... that's the first thought that comes to my mind when I read internet fearing posts such as that....

Seriously, the internet per se is not the problem.... it's the content one allows their gig pc to be exposed to while on the net.

Yes, but while I'm playing music I want the computer to focus and have no external distractions so I find it easier to just run the program and not worry about something coming up.

What's going to come up???????????

If you're program has internet enable features (VDJ has them as well as Rockit does) then the program is ready for what might pop up....

I've never had an issue caused by internet access. (Knocks on Wood)

It's not internet access by the DJ program Rob, it internet access by other programs that can cause problems...

Let's say yer anti-virus decides to update itself in the middle of a gig, and do a scan. Your hard drives are then in a state of partial lock (file and folder locks). Drive heads are jumping all over the place!

What if you have Google Toolbar installed, and it decides to index your drives in the middle of a song, and send the results back to the mother ship?

There's no problem being connected, as long as your DJ software is the only one talking... ;)

If that's how you have a gig computer configured.... you should be lucky if you only crash the DJ software.....

I wasn't refering to using a computer you'd use for general websurfing that would have these features and plugin's running in the back ground.

I was refering to a computer configured for network access in order to facilitate gig necessary internet access....

C'mon Rob -- how many of you folks are doing a gig, and chatting with us here via yer browser...? ;)

Yer browser is the worst possible thing you could open at a gig (maybe iTunes could be worse, depending). Your email is probably next.

Do you realize how they impact your computer, that happens to be tasked with playing a song, sorting a list, etc...?

Then you get the folks who think their smart phone is the answer, yet are actually talking to the same WiFi network their computer is. Most smart phones will default to the WiFi connection if possible, and will slow down your computer's connection.

Personally, I really see no need to be connected at a gig. If I need it for some reason, it will be on the backup computer, through a wired connection. I don't need to see album cover art at a gig (because I already tagged my songs properly with the art).

It's not necessary if you've done your homework properly, and then you remove any possible issues... ;)

I have no problem running iTunes or Amazon.com as I use these to obtain requested songs on the spot if I don't have them.

Why didn't you have them...?

If I don't have it, I don't play it -- easy :)

I won't play a song in front of an audience that paid for me, without having listened to it in its entirety first. That's what I get paid for ;)

One I don't have every song known to man....

Simple solution don't buy the explicit version of any song....

A good example is the song Yellow I don't have it and don't intend on purchasing it... yet I was able to stream it live and made the audience happy.

So you used netsearch with VDJ I presume?

I'm very picky on quality and while I played with it on my desktop, I still won't play downloaded songs. I have not purchased any downloaded song and yes my CD collection is very big and it is still growing. I'm not against technology however for my own egocentric needs I need to have a hardcopy of every file I use.

I have used it to great success with that on the spot request that just has to be played or they can't get lucky with the bridesmaid.... but, since it is now a subscription item it only plays 30 seconds worth.... but, when it did work I'd cache the song and then preview it before playing live.... in home use I found that some cuts were less than desireable or incomplete which is why I pre-listen.

For someone like me who's CD collection is slim online tools like iTunes and Amazon are a God send.... I'm still purchasing songs one at a time instead of by the CD.... allowing me to go out with confidence that if there is a request for a song I don't have I don't have to tell them, sorry I don't have it. Instead I say let me see if I can find it.
