over the phone? I have a person that works with me who is getting married later this year about 2 hours south of Phx. I met with her and her fiance' last week and she was ready to book. She hesistated because he wanted to talk it over.

A few days ago she tells me that her and her fiance' are heading to Tucson to talk with a preferred DJ through that venue because of a possible discount. She did mention that she called this DJ but he wouldn't give her any pricing over the phone...not even an estimate.
IMHO, this sounds weird. I know that they're meeting with him just to make her fiance' happy. Does this sound strange to you that the DJ didn't giver her an estimate?

She's supposed to let me know by Monday either way about the situation.

Sounds like the typical worther-type "sell the sizzle, not the steak" mentality. They want to have full control of the situation and all variables so they can start their price-justification/rationalization pitch right from the beginning and see it all the way through because they know sticker-shock would prevent them from getting a gig otherwise.

Any more questions? LOL:tricool:

There is not enough information. Did they first give that other DJ all the details?

If I was that other DJ and did not have all the details there is no way I would quote a price. If that is the case then I don't blame him.
Remember there are ALWAYS two sides to a story!

True, but why should we assume that he did not ask the questions required to GET said information while on the call? That he didn't ask or try to gather more info, or that he did try but the clients refused are both way too far fetched scenarios. Occam's razor dictates we go with the recounting given - that its his policy to not give pricing on the phone.

Edit: Besides, the fact that he is the recommended dj for the venue in question removes MANY of the variables from the equation that he would need to deliver a rock-solid price anyway...

It is still one side of the story! I was not there and there were no pictures or videos for me to make my own conclusions. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

I myself wont buy anything unless I know what the price is. For instance, if I was driving down the road and saw a car for sale that I thought was a nice car, I wouldn't even stop to look unless the price was posted. Just the way I am I guess but I think a lot of people are like that. I don't post my prices on my web page but I have really been considering for just this reason. I know if I go to a website to look for something and if I find the item I want, if the price is not posted I simply go on to the next website. What about the rest of you. If you were looking for something online say a DJ controller or a light etc, if the price wasn't posted would email for a price????

I would want to know what I am buying before I know the price. The benefits and features are my first priority! If I like, I will find a way to buy.

Others just work the opposite way. They know their budget, want to identify all options within their budget first, and then will select from available options from there.

MOST people pick the best from what they can afford. So naturally the latter needs to be determined first.

To each his own my brother! I like going to stores where the sales associate can help me with my purchase vs pointing me in the direction of the products.:triwink:

I bought my second EV RE2 from Ben, not because it was within my budget but because it was the best thing to do. He saved me a lot of heartaches.

To each his own exactly right! Having worked music retail however, I can tell you that it's rare indeed that associates are useful from a knowledge standpoint beyond what they themselves use or what the store sells.

I'll take my chances with having the pimply-faced kid on temporary leave from his mom's basement show me to the products. :tritongue:

You should be able to tell when the person knows their stuff! Just like interviewing a DJ before you hire them, right?

Until I know ALL the details of the event, I do not give them a price quote.
When?...Where?....inside?...Outside?....ceremony?...reception details? (setup area, starting time, must end by time, Etc)....how many guests?....Any additional things like photo montage?, separate sound system in a different location?, What are they looking for in a DJ?, special editing of songs?, Etc. Etc.

This Tucson DJ knows many of the details...he still wouldn't give even a ballpark quote. If I was the client, I wouldn't even meet with this guy unless I had an idea of what it's going to cost.

next time i will tell Ben i need to interview him before i buy anything,LOL.

No need to interview Ben. He knows his stuff and we are lucky to have him as a preferred vendor/sponsor on ODJT.:triwink:

YES!!!

I lost a $800 booking because the in house dj was only $300! And these clients are my friends, and they love my services. But that price fits their budget a little more than mine did.

Well if I have to, I can give a start price but not necessarily a maximum price.

a VERY large percentage of people who TEST DRIVE a car, BUY the car!

this DJ is trying to avoid price shoppers
by forcing them to sit down for a face-to-face.
