So, I am working on NYE... and it is an unusual barter.

Many of you know that I don't like to work on NYE, at any price, really, but I had an interesting proposal tonight, and I am going to do it.... My wife and I were out eating at a brand new Indian restaurant tonight. Food was great, and the staff were so nice and friendly. Anyway, the owner and I got to talking and I mentioned that I DJ.

Anyway we chatted a few minutes and then asked me if I was busy on NYE, and of course I wasn't since I don't usually want to work on NYE.

Well we decided to create a barter in exchange for me working NYE... BTW, this place is just 2 minutes from home. So the deal is, I DJ from 9PM - 12:30 AM. No lights, just music.

In return, my family gets to eat for free for the first 6 months of 2011, once per week. We would probably go twice a month. And when our kids come, the bill would normally run about $80..... So, that's $160 a month x 6.... So that is $960 for NYE... but here is what is cool. He said that as long as we don't bring "repeat friends" we can bring two extra people once a month who will also eat for fee. ( He's looking to get new customers from people we bring )

So potentially this could be worth about $1500 for working NYE... And of course the benefit to him is basically it only costs him what the food costs.

Kind of weird, but I like it. All he asks is that we tip the staff based on what our bill would have been if we were paying for the meals.

Interesting, eh?

I have to go over in the morning with a contract.

sounds good and it opens a window for new customers for Papa too.i do hope both sides do not abuse the privilege.

Barter is great...And tax free.....

The only downside is you may get tired of Indian food by June

Hell, if i wasn't on my health kick, I could eat Indian at least once a week. But much of what I love about Indian food has coconut milk in it, and that stuff is not good.

Tonight, I had Tandoori Chicken... and Mulligatawny Soup... I ate all the soup, but took home half of the chicken.

Since you like Indian food, that's a great deal.

You might even be able to use it as an 'office'. Have your client meetings there, share an appetizer at the same time, etc.

I did an employee Christmas party this past Sunday for a local chain restaurant, half cash-half gift cards. I'll use the gift cards for Christmas presents.

Nothing wrong with barter, as long as its for a good or service you can use.

Sounds like you made a good deal Papa.

Do you ever DJ for money? If I was losing wieght the last thing I would barter my services for is 6 months of free food!!! Whatever floats your boat.......

Shane, why do you have an issue with almost everything I do?

And yes, I dj for money all the time... that's too boring to post here.

And I can eat whatever I want... mostly... it's all about portion control.

Nice thought Dave, That did not occur to me.

I am not like most of the members here that give you a pat on your back everytime you make a post & agree with everything you do. The last post you made that I commented on was about doing a free karate gig. Now here you are again providing your services for something other than money, food.

You made the post to start a discussion and I am simply doing that.

I think everyone here would love to read stories on how you are landing paying jobs too since you get them "all the time". I don't think anyone here would find that boring.

When I think about bartering my services for food all I can picture is a homeless man with a sign "will work for food"......sorry I guess that's just me!

At least have the owner give you gift certificates to his business. You could at least give those to your future/past/potential clients. then if you decide you want indian you can use one of the gift certificates on your family.

I worked a Christmas season for three weeks and with two DJs per night. We got 2/3rds payment and the rest in gift cards. I used those for prizes at future events as well as client meetings for lunch etc.

Shane - I must respectfully disagree... Personally (like many of the DJs on ODJT) I get plenty of paid gigs of my own, and I would tune out someone who posted weekly to talk about another paid event pretty quickly...

I mean, is it REALLY of interest to you (or anyone here) to read about which paid booking I got THIS week? However, reading about ALTERNATIVE methods of doing business, and ways of marketing that allow you to get your name out while still making a buck or two is kind of interesting... Personally I'm bringing Chuck's idea from the "karate school" to a local school of my own to see if we can work out a deal for a Saturday afternoon deal in February when I'd otherwise be sitting at home...

Barter is a recognized form of commerce (to the point that the IRS expects you to claim any benefit from barter just as you would cash.) I've personally worked deals with my mechanic to provide services for his wedding in exchange for auto repair services, I've done work for a videographer in return for pro video shooting and editing...

If posts from certain folks aren't to your taste, you can certainly choose not to read them or as a last resort, there's always the "Ignore" function...

YMMV...

Barter ius not totally tax free. The sales tax still needs to be paid by somebody. Either the customer or the establishment needs to pay. I have belonged to Barter Exchanges before and that is how it works. It must be stated that the establishment has the responsibility to collect and pay the Sales Tax.

Shane,
Barter is a legitimate form of business. You are getting something in return for your services not to mention exposure and additional gigs from others intimately involved.
I was heavy into Barter Exchange in the 80's early 90s where I belonged to a pool where you had given members offering different services and products. You did not necessarily have to barter with a given person or company. When you traded services you got "Barter Dollars" in exchange which you could use at another member's business to get what you want. They in turn would recoup any Trade Dollars spent and add it to their Trading Bank Account.
