I wonder this from time to time.

From the very public forums like Our DJ Talk, DJ Chat and whatever the hell Ryan Burger calls his now, to the ones that are less public or invite only. I have been a part of most on both ends of the spectrum.

It's been about 15 or so years since these were introduced to the DJ Industry nationwide.

Has it helped or hurt the industry?

I may be biased but I think overall they help. If you set aside the infighting from time to time people are networking and learning from each other most of the time. Private invite only boards definitely have their place but you generally get less of the opinion spectrum in my opinion.

If I were to do it all over again. I'd charge a nominal one time fee (0.99) upon registration to keep out the looky-loos, spammers, and duplicate accounts.

Jim,

Only TommyO could answer that question -- alas, he has left us for greener pastors, erm, I meant pastures... :sqlaugh:

BTW, personally, I think DJ forums suck -- I don't see why people spend so much time on these things -- they should get a life... :yoWave:

Who is TommyO?

Anyway, I think it's a mixed bag. They have contributed to ideas, but they have certainly made artificial cliques.

This is my first set of posts on a public chat board in about a year. I was a part of one of those cliques. I liked it in some ways, didn't in others.

Who is TommyO?

Well, in a former life, that would be me. LOL.

Jim, you know me. This is Tom Ohlendorf also known as Goodknightdj.

I told Cap that you were good people on Facebook and I mean that.

Anyway, I think I will answer that...

Forums have the good, the bad, and the ugly (don't say it Rick!).

If you are looking for information then I highly recommend this forum and, sorry Dan, Mobile Beat. Most times, if you are known on the forum, you can get an answer but if you are a lurker that pops in with a newbie question and a low post count, be prepared to get blasted.

The folks around here are good, even Steve LeBlanc and Softjock Rick. I call out Steve because he and I tend to go around in circles with each other but I often see his point. I call out Rick just for the hell of it. :tritongue:

The bottom line is, it all depends what you are looking for. Like life, you will find the knowledgeable folks and the bull****ters. You just have to recognize the bull****ters and weed them out.

Like Rick, I don't know for sure how it's been for the industry. I don't know what % of DJs actually participate in forums.

For me, they have been incredibly valuable. Almost all of the great ideas I've had in the last 6 or 7 years have come from people on this site or others. I have had people email me and say kind words about how much I know about the DJ business, when the reality is I've learned most of it right here. I just DJ a lot, so I get to put a lot of what I've learned into practice....and maybe put my own little spin on it. But very few things have been original ideas.

Sure, there are the whiners, cry babies, ego maniacs, and the know-it-alls, etc...but for the most part, there are just your average people trying to make a living and get better at what they do....and most of us have made some great friends and great business contacts along the way.

So, if participating in a forum has been bad for anyone, I would have to say it is their own fault.

Why do you have to be such a "RICHARD" all the time!!!!
Answer me!!:triwink::tritongue:

Yes Ma'am... :D

BTW, grab me another beer while yer in the kitchen, and I'll tell ya the secret to life...

Only beer I have in my fridge is Rolling Rock - so if that is good enough for a beer connoisseur like yourself - I would love to sit and chat with you about the secret to life!!!

Hey Jim!

Good to see you here. Seems to me you ask a great question. Forums are a mixed bag, and since there's no real way to go back, so I'm not sure a definitive answer would make much of a difference, even if we could get one, to your question. It's just like technology: if it's easier than ever to do the most basic of jobs called "D.J.", the good part is: MY job is easier. The bad part is: it appears so easy and inexpensive to do, there are almost always a ton of new D.J.s with just enough knowledge to convince an increasing percentage of the public that they're able to do what I do for a lot less. Add the economic crash, and it only feeds this trend.

My goal is to adapt and survive, no matter what changes technology (forums and other internet means included) happen.

Forums help.

<inflating head> When I first discovered dj forums I was really amazed how much we did things fairly similar. I was hoping I would learn some new tricks but really only a couple tid bits. Even the high profile djs with their books and videos I purchased all preached the same things I was already doing. Not to the letter but really close.

I guess I was lucky and trained by a great dj who really knew the biz!

gee I remember jim :)

Jim it all depends on the person wanting the help and how he or she retains the help

I have been doing well for the info I need after 34+ years :)

Can't speak for the industry but they have been invaluable to me.............the forum troll.

I was just joshin' ya with that logo btw....:triwink:

You are right though... I found these DJ Forums through reading one of Stacy's books... from there I found others and finally landed here... good or bad I think they've all helped me.

This forum has helped me in just a short time, it was rough when I first got on (with that CD Organizer), but it worked out well.
I got another tough question coming soon, and of course the forum is their for me.
Thanks guys and dolls and in between
One Love

That "One love" in your posts is really starting to freak me out. Knock it off already. I am having "Feelings" and I don't like it.:triwink:

I have not posted here very much, but I have been reading this forum for over a year now I believe. I've gotten so many ideas from this board. Some are good ideas that I want to, and have, put into practice, and some are bad ideas that I can't believe other DJ's think are good ideas....

I'm at a point financially where I can invest a pretty good chunk of change into my business. I would think that everything I have on my wish list has come from people's opinions here. I've really gotten a whole idea of how I want my business to look and sound from reading this board.
