I have an event with my daughter's Tae Kwan Do school. I proposed it, knowing that he is doing a membership drive now through Thanksgiving. Basically he is trying to get more kids in his program, so I proposed this:

I will DJ for "free", but not really. The party is for the kids in the classes, but only if they bring friends to the event - at least one per person.

So I have wanted to provide a free party for the kids anyway, for all the hard work they do, but then I came up with this idea for a 2 hour party...

For every child that registers to take TKD at his school that day, I get the first month's membership cost - $90 per child, up to 11 kids. So, most likely, I'll make $90 or $180, but the potential is there for much more. We plan to do games and events based around TKD.

I was going to do it 100% for free, but then thought, "Why should I do it for free, while they TKD teacher could possibly make many thousands of dollars over the lifetime of these kids joining his school?"

If this works, I will start trying to propose this to all the martial arts schools in the area... and we have a whole lot of them.

What do you think, in general? Good idea? Bad idea?

This would be around 1PM on a Saturday or Sunday.

If you proposed to him a free offer then I think it's a bad idea for you to then come back and say, well how bout I get the first months membership. If I read your proposal wrong then oh well ignore this comment.

I didn't offer him a free event.

Sounds good to me, but you really will have to prepare yourself for the chances of not making any money that day

Quite prepared. Would more than likely expect free, but $180 also seems reasonable.

How about you dj the event for free, in return your daughter(s) have a few free months of tkd!!!! I think that's fair, your already mentally prepared to earn next to nothing. What good is earning $180 and then turning around and giving it back to the instructor.

I know this doesn't help with creating a marketing plan to present to other martial art schools but at least your daughter's membership is taken care of.

I could consider that for next time... we have an understanding for this event, though.

I think they would agree to give you a kickback for every new student, but not to the tune of $90 each. Also, the kids would have to be accompanied by their check writing parents. If this is a two hour "party" where the existing students bring a friend, they may just get dropped off and picked up.

The school should just market it as a special offer sign-up dance and pay you a percentage based on registrations.

I think it's a wonderful idea. Saturday or Sunday at 1 pm? No brainer in my book. I see very little downside.

Something you would have done for free any way.

I think it's very creative cross marketing. Keep the great ideas coming!

Personally, I wouldn't limit it to the first 11 kids.

Well what we agreed on is that I can't make more than $1000 for a 2 hour event.... That said, I find it highly unlikely I will even make $270.... But I get to shoot video, and I get to make kids happy, and I do TONS of kids events, so this is really a good chance to cross promote.

And, since I originally thought I might do it for free, any money I make is like bonus money.

thinking outside the box is how many ppl find their niche. Good for you ( or whoever had the idea)

I would say, follow the money ! In other words, get the parents involved before, during, and after.

Do they have to sign up that day? etc. ?

Can they do a "demo" outside in the parking lot, like an open house?

Work it!!! Could be a great day!

Maybe i'm dumb...But i couldn't accept $1,000 for only working for 2 hours...

I could, but realistically, I have no shot at that. But look at it this way... if I made $1000, that would mean he signed up 11 kids, and what an OVERWHELMING success that would be for him... and I was the one who brought him the idea.

Sorry Papa but this is worse than Facebook Drama - Do you really need our advice on this subject or just bragging - Just saying!

I am bragging about possibly making ZERO DOLLARS? Really? How is that possible?

EDIT, In fact, I said I would feel lucky to make $180.... that sure is a whole lot to brag about, I am sure.

Your motive confuses me...

Do you want to do a free show for the kids? or do you want-expect to be compensated??

If you want to be paid, then tell him that.

You're not dumb. It's nice that you have ethics. The problem is, you're not seeing yourself as capable of being WORTH $1000 for 2 hours of work. Respectfully submitted that your mentality needs to be adjusted.

SMACK!!!

Pap shared an innovative idea. If it works, this could be replicated into ALL of our areas (I'll certainly try it). And you wanna diss on him for it?

SMACK!!!
