I guess my thoughts on being "too bright" is that they can always be dimmed...but you can't increase the color, or intensity, if the fixture is not capable of delivering it.
I do understand that not all venues, or events, require what I am talking about. A lot of our venues have minimal 12-14ft ceilings... Some are very plain facilities that need that "bounce" of light to transform the room. or the rooms are very dark colored, with a lot of wood that absorbs light. Off the top of my head, I can think of about 6 facilities we play at that have 1 entire wall that is glass / windows...hence, daylight to compete with.
I think all of us probably choose what works for us in the situations that we find ourselves in. All I am saying, is don't jump in the pool with both feet until you know what the depth of the water is.
