Photobooths??

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
Wow Rick Ryan Im wondering how not having a photo booth lost a gig for you? Also Im thinking that one ought to just buy a venue and a Bridal shop, Flower shop, bakery and a jewelry store etc along with a limo company imagine the profits you could gain doing it all.
Im amazed at ones zeal to consider doing everything to find success as a DJ. Im but a simple man and provide music with a personal touch. If I were to stretch my self as far as some the music would not have the clout it has had in my career.

I remember, specifically, 2 prospects who asked if I could also provide a photobooth. When I said "no", they went elsewhere.......and with the DJ work. They simply chose a DJ that already had a photobooth.

A good booth goes for around $6000. We average 35 weddings a year. Do the math. This thing pays for itself in less than 6 months!
Year 2 , you can earn an extra $30 K.

Another way to go is to sub - contract a booth from another DJ. Then all you are doing is making a phone call and earning as much as $300 for your trouble.
In this scenario, doing 35 events a year, you would gain an extra $10 K.

The subbing it out factor...what happens if they have problems or drop the ball?...now I'm on the hook. I'd rather maybe refer it over to another company (charge them a referral fee?) so my name is not on the contract for this.

Like I said before, I don't understand how a single op DJ can still provide outstanding DJ/entertainment if he is juggling additional duties/trying to do it all. (chocolate fountains, photo booths, chair covers, balloons, Etc.)...what's next bartending?

All it takes is one little problem & now you've screwed up everything for the client (bit off more than you can chew)

Unless you have a complete staff to assist you, it's a receipe for a nervous breakdown!
 
I'm not saying that Photo Booths are the end all be all. Just got into it this year myself with a business partner and we sold 5 booths this year. We've also got 7 already booked for next year with bridal shows still to come to market this commodity to.

Either you grow, learn and adapt to your clients ever-changing needs or you get left behind. To me, the ones who are still only providing music will lose market share to those who continue to adapt and expand to their clientele.

A typical clause in contracts states that if they fall ill, accident, etc. all they have to do is return the deposit/retainer, Or if they do show up & there are problems...who do you think your client is going to come after?
No thanks. I'd rather refer the gig over to a professional that specializes in it or has the sdtaff that can properly do it.

I'll stay focused on providing quality entertainment (MC/DJ, Etc) rather than try & be a jack of all trades. There are still many prospects out there that understand quality vs. quanity of services.

If you bite off more than you can chew, eventually you will crash & someone's event will suffer.
 
Someone mentioned Chocolate Fountains. I have seen more as of late at almost every event. Two weeks ago at a Wedding they had that and also an Ice sculpture.

I do not have lights, yet when I am asked, I do not answer "No". Instead, I offer up the services of my buddy who does. I do the music and he does the lights. Maybe you should partner up with someone who offers up Photobooths and take a small cut for the referral.

You need not spread yourself too thin, nor become a jack of all trades.
A good network solution can help you not only earn more money, but, also stay in the race with the big guns!

Here in New Jersey, we have two very large event production companies who do all kinds of "EXTRA ENTERTAINMENT", aka "EE". Including Photo Booths.

These are professionals who won't let you down, and act and behave at an event as if they are part of YOUR company.

Oh yeah...bride from this past weekend called last Thursday night and wanted to add the photobooth for $1000 last minute "We had some leftover money in our budget"

My bride for next weekend wants to add the photobooth as well last minute. I don't know about you but there's an extra $2k gross laying around all mine for the taking.
 
But I also see it that your treading on a photographers toes when he can provide things like that too

you want photographers to start offering djs as a suppliment to thier photography work

no thanks I wont start offing them - too many photograhers i respect here
that do a great job already

if anyone asks I tell them to see the photographer....
 
A competent photographer will never worry about someone "stepping on his toes". Photo booth photos are of a completely different nature than professional wedding photos.

I heard the same concerns 2 years ago when we began offering "ZAP" photos as part of our show. Today, 60% of my wedding clients add on "ZAP" Photos. Again, totally different than Professional wedding photos.

Today's Disc Jockey Entertainer provides more services than ever before.
We find ourselves in the roles of Wedding Planner, Emcee, Entertainer, and now, in the advent of Plasma Screen Monitors, L.E.D. Intelligent Lighting, and Digital Photo & Video, we find ourselves also cast as Video Montage Producer, Lightscaping Engineer, ZAP Photo Producer, and Photo Booth Provider. Some of us even provide venue furniture and pipe & drape services!

We have matured as an industry, providing the various entertainment services today's brides demand!

Smart, ambitious DJ's will willingly grasp these new income adding opportunities to increase and expand their businesses, all offered to us because of the ever expanding entertainment options provided by the ever increasing technological advances before us!

LOL.. it could be that the DJ didn't do enough to compete with the booth... :triwink:

I own 3 photo booths and I always ask my clients... usually they will tell me.. o man, the DJ Sucked.. thank God we had your photo booth...

You know how many times i've heard that???

I never hear that when they get my DJ and Photo Booth Package.. and yes the photo booths distract people from dancing... but good music will make them find their way back to the dance floor...
 
But Steve the Dj industry can't even operate correctly,
let alone start providing things that have nothing to do with djing.....
