Custom shorter cables and... you know what I was going to say, Talk with Ben I'm sure he can make a panel with all your audio, video and power needs. Yes it will cost money but you'll love making things so much easier and no more mess. Look for Cap's posts of his system, his is color coded and labeled looks great.

While you're at it with the custom cables - make sure each end is labeled. I'd hate to have to diagnose something in the middle of a show and you just lost sound with that mess.

I'd also consider getting a smaller console and separate functions into different cases this connector panels off the back or slotted on the side.

several things have already been mentioned:

Custom lengths for the cables cable ties and hooks to hold the cables around the edges of the box, and put the back cover on the box once you have it set up!

You also have more than enogh room for a second power conditioner if you need it so you can get rid of the multiple outlet thing!

Consolidate the gear into different racks, so that the least amount of cables possible will connect those racks. For example, put all your mixing gear in one rack, then you will have 2 XLRs going to your amp rack, then 2 speaker cables and a power cable coming out of that rack.

Also, get back covers for the racks, and run the cables you need to out the front, that way people don't see them.

I can't tell...does that rack not have wheels? :dontknow: The inside of our rack is not pretty, but not that messy either....I make sure that it's hidden from view from the clients and guests, no matter what kind of event it is...YMMV

Good suggestions by the other guys too!

Did you have your speakers 30' apart? :sqwink: :p :D

That would require Rob to use power tools!

Actually that looks like me trying to use power tools....:tritongue: Rob would be trying to do something "kinky" with them....:trismug::tribiggrin:

Rob, there's excellent advice posted here. :)

Something I'd like to add ~ make use of those rear rack rails. You may mount hooks or other assorted sundries to the rear rails to hold cables that are used for patching between cases.

The case covers are deep enough so that they'll accommodate some extension from the rear rails.

I still don't understand what the hell is in those racks most of you lug around. I have a source, a mixer and some speakers. Never has anyone complained about my sound.

...except when it was too loud. :triwink:

Like Bill Quigly said, "Sell it and buy a beer." He's just some guy that used to work for my dad. He also used to say, "Good enough for the girls we go with." but that doesn't apply here. ;)

Seriously though, all the above is great advice. With a little work, you'll have it looking wonderful! :)

I must have a rack. I have seen DJs that don't rack their equipment, it looks like a mess of components & wires all over the place. Components stacked up tends to look unprofessional, like some kid playing DJ in his bedroom.

The inside of that rack looks like an accident waiting to happen.
Zip ties!

Ok, Randy brought up a very good point... and as much as I hate to admit it.... he is right.

Look at my rack!

It's a mess. What can I do to cean it up?

Rob,
I am all the way up in New England so I can't take any pics to show you. Yes you must start off with the shortest length of cable without causing stress on the cable joints.
Next you have to make a harness with breakouts. I used to work at NASA/Johnson Space Center and did many of those on the Consoles at Mission Control in Houston.
Maybe Tomorrow I can draw something to illustrate and take a pic and post.

I wouldn't worry about shorter or custom-length cables.
having a little room to play with is good if you need to remove the equipment but still have it plugged in (repair, etc)
I have two racks:
one with the mp3 player and mixer. the back cover slips into a slot at the bottom and attaches with a latch at the top. When I use it, I latch the top and let the bottom hang free, and pull my connecting cable out the back and around the sides of the rack, so they hang on MY side of the DJ table.
the second rack is for my amp and EQ. this one has a back cover that never comes off. I have attached a connector panel for ac, audio in, and speaker out plugs...which again is on MY side of the table, out of view from the crowd.
If you find a way to pull your cables thru YOUR side of that rack, rather than out the back, you can simply leave the back rack cover on during the event.

so is the rack even got anything in it other than your mixer? I cant tell with all the wires. Please list the components.
