One of the unique things about living here in central Florida is we get to experience a lift off right in our front yard.

Night launches are the best! Sometimes they have secret launches and it still kind of freaks you out when you just happen to look up and there is rocket with a huge ball of fire behind it sailing thru the sky!

Awsome. Good job NASA!

It is always a really cool thing to watch, esp. night launches. This picture is from the last launch and taken from my house on the W coast.

I was lucky enough that both times I was in Florida I got to see night launches from just a couple of miles down the coast from Canaveral (New Smyrna) I have some pics and video somewhere i'll see if I can dig them up
 
Is this something you still feel the government should be spending tax money on doing?

I'm all for letting NASA go it's way, cut off funding, and become a private company. They can make their money for operation launching private satallites.
 
Have to say we were fortunate to catch a daytime & night launch while we've vacationed in Orlando.

A truly amazing site.


Even more amazing - don't the contracts for the shuttle program, like everything else go to the lowest bidder? :sqerr:

My Dad was a senior engineer for the Lunar Module during the Apollo program and we (the family) got to go see some of the launches from VIP seating. It's a sound and feel you can never explain but NEVER forget.
OH....And you can thank the "government" funded space program for a lot of the equipment you take for granted today.
The 2 things that get the technical juices flowing for advancement are spaceflight and war. I'll take spaceflight thank you very much.
And another thing.......
During the Apollo program.....American's spent MORE money per year on PET FOOD than our government spent on the Apollo program for every year we were doing it.

I think when our country is in economic difficulties...I would cut back on the space funding quite a bit. That's me.

I know NASA serves a purpose, but do we really need to be picking up rocks off of Mars today?

Now NASA has a lot of other things that I strongly support.

The DOG FOOD THING? Bleh. Poor comparison. Give me something more that I can agree too. :sqlaugh:
 
Why do you need to agree to anything? The fact remains that American's spent more money an pet food that the space program spent on missions.
Why go get Mars rocks today?
If not today....When?
Like it or not, if mankind as a race doesn't branch out....this old rock will not support life as we know it. Look what we've done to it in just the last 200 years.
200 years from now...what will it look like.
And if some NUTJOB get's a hold of a nuke....then what?

Imagine the things that wouldn't have been developed and what won't be if the program was scrapped.

Billions in Iraq widley accepted millions in the space program and everyone's up in arms

We are all dead...and we go to our next life. I'm just don't see anyone living on that big red rock.

And even if we got nuked...and earth was destroyed..would you really be happy if you were living on mars?

Again..same with Jeff's post....not really trying to go anywhere with these thoughts...but discuss with me your thoughts. I am intrigued.
 
God put me on this beautiful earth for a reason...and when he decides it is time to go..it is time to go.

I have more faith in God...then worrying about some Nukes.
 
Well, like it or hate it, the space program keeps a lot of people working. I too question the necessity of building and maintaining a space station but NASA programs do employ a lot of people.

Not just the ones we see and read about. There are thousands of workers, contractors and suppliers and NASA puts food on their tables. :)

OK...now why can't we help the common man start a business...oh wait..they have to jump a billion hoops to even try get a loan now a days.

Everyone is spot on..for the most part. But maybe the space explorations are not as important as some of the other issues that are happening today.

Why cannot we build a car so we don't have to rely on gas...but yet we can spend oodles to go to the moon?
