I got a few new lights recently and re-mounted everything on a crossbar that I put atop a tripod. I would assume that some DJ's mount their lights on the crossbar when they get to a gig, and remove each of them at the end to store them in their own case.
I am trying to keep everything mounted on the bar, including my control unit, but I need to find a way to keep them protected in transit.
I am fiddling with the idea of mounting everything on a rectangular board, which will the BACK of the lights when it is mounted on the tripod...
and then simply lowering the lights into a wooden box (which I will make) so the board becomes the lid...and protects the whole unit.

any ideas, suggestions, or comments?
anyone have a better idea?
anyone have pic's they can share?

thanks in advance!

Just make the box so that the 2 ends of the t-bar hang on the sides, and put a lid on it. You don't want the extra weight when trying to get them up in the air.

then put wheels on it, and a couple handles. Stack 2 of them up and you won't need a lid for the bottom one, the top one will become the lid. (works great if you have a trailer, if loading it into pickup or something, different story)

Excellent idea...
and thanks for the VISUAL!

No problem, google sketchup is pretty easy to use!

As for the sides, just make the box regular, then make a couple of ends that will slide into the box, and cut the slot in there for the lights go in.

Or, to save some weight, just make a couple of strips that will go across the top edge of the ends with the slot cut into it for the lights to drop into. If your worried about more support, use a thin strip going from the center of the board down to the bottom of the case.

Of course, you'll carpet or foam the inside to help keep the lights from getting scuffed up during transit...right?!

yeah, I was looking at those, too.
but my current set-up was too wide and too long.

...of course, if I moved the lights around a little.....

thanks Gaffle

I don't know the size of your lights but another alternative is to use a large diameter PVC Pipe. Cut to required length, cap and seal/glue one end and cap the other. Attach a handle to the top and viola you now have a carrying case. I don't know how much the materials would cost but the only real assembly will be a metal handle on the top or straps around it. I do however like the Box Style mentioned above though.
