I voted clarity, but that is just so I don't annoy anyone, and I see it is the most important....I don't really agree, but I will let it go...

Chuck! I always thought you were a leader not a follower! :sqeek: Only the well accomplished live in Maui/Hawaii right? All them bikinis and golf clubs and pineapple shirts! :sqlaugh:

Chuck is correct. What is the demographics of these judges? Are they in their 20's, 40's, 60's? Are they all male, all female, half male half female, shemales, heshes? The make up of those who will judge is just as important as to what equipment is being compared.

I understand this is hypothetical and unrealistic but lets vote anyway.

Just regular folk Ron! Not recording engineers! It does not matter, know why? If you were one of the DJs would you change your system if you did not like the type of judge! You will be stuck with what you have. No further comment needed, your honor!

I would change my system, since you brought it up, if I KNEW the type of judge,,, I mean, since you asked...

Whoo hoo! I love these answers!

Well, let's see...their first impression would be based on tidiness and size of setup. Their 2nd would be on sound (quality, coverage, range & clarity of tone). A small percentage would strictly look at a label and make their assumptions.

Val, there are 5 options in the Poll. If you would, pretty please, please cast your vote. I promise you won't have to dip your forefinger in blue/violet ink!

I'm with Chuck. I would not only change my system (except for the Bose because it encompasses all) for the judges but I would change my system for the venue as well.

There is no right or wrong answer here. There is no right or wrong system either. There are to many variables. So no need to judge.

How will most people judge a system? Lets suppose there are 5 DJs in a room/Ballroom/EventHall, each with his/her own system. There is an audience that has to rate them for overall performance. What do you think will be the determining factor? There are four options listed. I have left out weight/ease of transport because if I was a judge I would not care about that and I don't think others would either. (That is a DJ only issue and not a selling point)

Why do you even need DJs in the mix?

If the subject of the evaluation is purely the gear, as the options suggest, and the same program was being broadcast through each, and there were no obvious flaws with the presentation of the rig, I think it is a no brain-er, Sound Clarity (Bass, Mids , Hi).

Only One bride in 25+ years has ever show any concern with equipment and she was only asking because she had been to a recent reception at the venue/wedding mill she had chosen, one that includes the "free" "dj" (waiter/busboy if you decline the offer), and the house system was horrendous. She simply didn't want me using the house system and wanted the same rig she had experienced at a friend's wedding, that we were fortunate enough to have been the entertainment.

If, as your proposition suggests, that the judgment is more system AND dj, the debate is purely subjective and the options presented are not sufficient.

Now, will these people be prospective clients? If so, they will rate on the DJ's price.

No Tom! Just people who are doing a rudimentary assessment of 5 different sound systems.

You have described an A/B(/C/D/E) test. In this case, I think that most people will choose the system with the best sound clarity.

BUT, in reality this almost never happens. When is the last time you did an A/B test with just two systems in the same room?

I did an A/B with my previous system and my new system. The old system was good - I really liked the sound. The new system is very different and much better - better clarity, better integration of the lows and mid-highs, better pattern control. The few people who were there when I did the test described the differences as "huge" or "night and day". People who were not there, but who have heard both systems tell me that both sound good.

The vast majority of people (DJ's and musicians included) are not able to accurately compare two PA systems they hear at different times.

I personally think the poll is too ambiguous to be able to cast a vote as already stated by others it depends on the crowd and type of event you are doing.

For a high school or college event you better have size and power to allow the majority of the crowd to feel it.

For a wedding you need clarity and coverage not volume (for the most part)

For a 50th wedding anniversary as long as it is back ground music no one will care one way or the other.

There are just too many if's for this to work as a poll, and it all comes back down to each DJ's preference.

Who said anything about "Brides"? But now that you said it, she did notice that the clarity was not there didn't she? The kind of system itself had nothing to do with it! It could have been a first class quality system that had its controls improperly set. If so, would it be fair to forever discount that system/brand? I don't think so. Anyways I am getting close to giving my summary after we get a few more responses & votes.
I hate to disappoint those of you who may think it will be a Brand bashing. IT WILL NOT!

Trust me and bear with me, there is a reason for this. :sqwink:

you could just bring DYNACORD!!

Now! Now! Now, Jon, No name calling! :sqerr: The Bose boys are asleep today so don't wake them up. The JBL boys and those with the big rigs will love to "accidentally" have a speaker topple over on your head!

I have done it each and every time I add new gear which equates to a wider variety of configurations. Off the top of my head i can say I have at least seven configurations = seven different systems. More details on this answer later! Y'all are trying to read my mind!

Well I would have to put it down to size, if we are going to condense this issue.

Of course size is dependant upon need. Large size for one type of gig small size for another!

Clarity is simply a given in any situation regardless of the system used clarity is achieved by the ability of the operator of the system and his or her knowledge of setup, acoustics and use of the system. Any system regardless of brand can be made to sound decent or lousy depending on the person who is setting up and operating it.

The vast majority of the general public is not going to notice the brand of the speakers used in a venue (if you don't believe this do a poll of people leaving a concert and ask them what brand of speakers were used at the concert) For the most part the only ones interested in the brand are techs, musicians and DJs.

Power again falls to size, use, and the interest of the techs not the general public, for the most part the public wants to be able to hear it, but otherwise have no interest in the amount of watts being used or the sensitivity of the speakers themselves.

Coverage, again this also falls to size and the ability of the operator of the system and his or her knowledge and use of acoustics.

I hope this is what you are looking for as an answer because it is the only answer I can give for a poll setup like this one is!
