I am starting this thread so as not to hijack Snoconeguy's thread.
I am getting into up lighting very soon and I was just wondering a few things.
How far apart do you space the fixtures?
How much do you charge per fixture?
Which fixture do you recommend?
DMX or not?

I know of some very good fixtures. Spacing depends on the effect you want. I would recommend DMX control as it gives you more control (always better).

Mike

Been using two fixtures the Chauvet LEDRain 56 (think this is what Snowcone Guy is using) cans for larger rooms, would recommend these if you want to start now. And for small rooms with low ceilings, or just accenting shorts columns and planters, and under table lighting I use some Eliminator E-76 cans.

Check with Ben or Kat for the latest prices on the Chauvet cans, you get a nice price break when you but a case (6) at a time. I've purchased some of mine from several different places, but the last 12 from them, and I wish I'd gotten all of them there.

Chauvet LEDRain 56 is ok but I would wait for American DJ Profile 64 LED. MAP for that par is 200$ so my guess for market price is 120$.
How Far? Hard to say, it depends on many different factors, how many lights, how many people at the table, etc., etc.
40-50$ per light.
DMX!

For an upcoming event I am charging 400.00 for 10 cans. 2 for the sweet heart table, 4 for the right side and 4 for the left side of the room. Chauvet 200b fixtures. I only own 4 cans and I will be renting the other 6 cans from a DJ friend.

I just bought 2 colorstrips, mainly for my truss but if you ever need a larger area uplighted these really do their job! They are very bright, and the colors are very smooth and vivid. I can invision one or two of these behind your DJ setup, and then maybe an LEDRain56 for more around the room.

As far as DMX, I would 100% recommend using at least a simple controller like the Elation LED operator or something similar.

To answer the question as directly as I can
How far apart do you space the fixtures?
Depends of the geometry and architecture of the building... I like to do pillars or the wood accents on the walls, usually 8 - 12ft apart. Honestly, Really depends...
How much do you charge per fixture?
Its included usually in what I do, I would image $20 or so...
DMX or not?
Very situational, If I can run the cables no problem, they are there... If its complicated to run the cables, and they are not set up close to the dance floor, I put them in a solid color and leave them... If they are near the dance floor, even if the cables are hard to run, I will do my best.

Young : How much money are you willing to spend?

What brightness do you want?
How far does the throw need to be for the majority of your facilities?
What kind of illumination pattern (narrow, medium, wide)?
If standard alone (non-DMX) what options are available?
If DMX, 3 or 6 channel?
If DMX cabled, 3 pin or 5 pin?
Dip switch or LED panel?
Wireless?
Battery power?
True white (RGBAW)?
8mm, 10mm, 1w, 2w?

Put your homework attribute into gear and start learning before buying. And be prepared to pay $400-$500 beginnings per fixture for the basic real stuff. I can't afford it either, so there was settling for cheaper stuff that works but I don't pretend it's high end when offering the option.

I was really hoping Mike might chime in with some of his edjumacted book learnin advice but I'm sure he realizes such a general question is really a loaded gun waiting to go off.
