When the crowd at your private party is dead.... you have 150 people but for the first hour of dance the most you have had on the floor is 20 people....
It's a older private party 25 - 50 age range


You know that they are having a good time, even with the small crowd on the dance floor, the energy is good....

Do you lead a dance?
Chicken, Macarena, Electric?

Do you pull out something interactive?
Limbo, Balloon Stuff?

Do you just go "oh well, I guess they are not a dancing crowd"

What goes through your mind?
 
I like to use the Electric Slide, I start it out and let it play for about ten seconds. The dance floor will usually get some out there kinda starting at different points, I then stop the song and make a joke about a pontential accident on the dance floor. I will then encourage some more dancers out which usually works and have them all turn and face me then start the song over and count them off 5, 6, 7 8, now right and....so on. I read the floor and bang a sure fire dance song or in my case some excellent cheese like play that funky music white boy, usually some type of funk song. My mentor uses the phrase "when in doubt play that funky music" and this tends to work for me. It has'nt always but more times than not somewhere around 80% or higher.

I also think that the meet and greet is one of the most important aspects of getting the floor activated. Every table usually has a party starter, I will remember the names and call them out with their tablemates for their requested song the party starter will most of the time encourgage his table to join in.
 
I pull out the eighties club dance stuff it almost always works when I decide its even time to play such 90s obscure hits as Was Not Was- Walk The Dinosaur, Escape Club- Wild Wild West and others. The first time I attempted this sarcastic reply to a empty dance floor it blew my mind the response I got for being a smart Donkey.

First, my crowd is never "dead".

If it were, then I'd start crying.

After I wipe my tears...

For an older crowd that is not moving to the dance floor I will drop in about three or four slow songs in a row.

9 times out of 10 this will fill the floor. After they warm to being on the floor you can pick up the pace with some oldies tunes that have a faster pace.

Generally this works for me your results may vary.

It was advice like this that I took about 5 years ago that made one of the biggest impressions on a "how to" I've ever run across with a chatboard.

Don't worry Chuck I haven't gone drag in a few years now.

Just be careful if you dance with him... he might step on your feet. He don't mean to, though. :)
 
I don't mind if he steps on my feet, but I'm a wondering where his darn hands are!! LOL :)

what has worked for me is 1. Slow Songs, especially a good "Bump & Grind", Slow song, and when all else fails 2. I'll try our buddy... Chubby Checker and "The Twist", or the "YMCA", One other that works for such an "Old, Old" crowd is "Smooth"........
Bottom Line though was that you said they were having fun, that's really what its all about, isn't it.................
 
sometimes in this business patience is the major key as Jim imentioned. Sometimes a party has to happen on its own clock. If it doesnt happen at 830 yet they arent complaining folks dancing in their seats, tapping toes,20 folks on the floor, etc. then perhaps at 845 after playing a couple of Steves suggested ballads or a waltz, or bump and grind is when it truly takes off.Playing the party starters when the party isnt quite ready to happen will have been a waste of a possible perfect song later.

Correct....I usually like to save my "Silver Bullets" til later.....
