Ok, looks like I'm gonna book my first Sweet 16 birthday party. This will be for a repeat customer. I did her Sister-In-Laws wedding on 7-7-07.

I have lights covered and compared to back then I've moved forward light years from 2007.

I guess the big question is what music should I get heavy on?

The guest of honor of course is a girl. It will be 4 hours at a venue. I'm expecting 50-75 tops.

Any game idea's and such would be appreciated as well.
 
Sweet 16s can be a beast based on the maturity of the guest of honor and whether they skew rock or hip hop. Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus etc are OUT.. they are WAY too young

Is she a Lil Wayne, Akon, Ne-Yo, Plies, T.I. kind of girl or
Fall out Boy, Secondhand Serenade, Snow Patrol, All American Rejects kind of girl

I do a lot of these but it depends on what type of music she likes. I mostly do these for the Hispanic crowd they just want Salsa,Merengue,Reggaeton,Bachata and some new Hip Hop.:sqlaugh:
 
I'll know more this Saturday as I'll be meeting with the mom and hopefully the GOH too.... I'll lay it all out for them with details of what I need from them in order to be sure I have the right music and what not.

I figure if she can tell me who her favorite artists are rather than songs.... I may be able to round out a better selection of music. Knowing the artists will give me a window into the genre's she's into even if she doesn't know she's into them. Does that make sense?
 
Kirb's right. Your best bet is to get a written request list from the b-day girl. You may wish to give 'em an email address to send it and any updates.

Get it as soon as possible so you'll be sure to have the music you need. They'll be adding to it before the show, trust me on this. ;)
 
Thanks Fred. The last Sweet 16 that we did, we had the young lady give us a list of "must plays" and "I'd like to hear" and we came armed with exactly what she and her friends and family wanted to hear (she even included requests from the parents/chaperones) which worked out quite well for us.

We already had about 95% of the songs that were requested, and by getting a specific list of songs we made the little lady and her parents, who were paying the bill...very happy.

Yeah... these things are often smallish, close-knit parties. Like most birthday parties, the b-day girl invites her close friends and some relatives.

It isn't all rap and hip hop. You may find that several parents and other adult relations are in tow for the free food, lol. When we do private youth-oriented shows we'll split the music genres up in sets. This gives the adult couples some buckle-polishing time. :)
 
Very true Fred, in fact it may surprise some how many "oldies" get requested by the youngsters...especially if they've been exposed to their parents music!

It's a big kick to hear the girls "squeal" when they hear their favorite song(s) being played... (note to Rob, remember to wear your noise cancelling headphones for this gig!):sqwink:

What I plan to do is use Gigbuilder for just that let them and their guests log into my system and make requests from there... do you think I should have them compile a list out side of that?

I agree the parents and adults are equally as important as the GOH... to be made happy.

Thanks... so true. I would expect only 33% of the invited to even show.

I have a set of NAG 3.0 do you suppose those would work... they are very affective at home?
 
Unfortunately the husband got called into work early this morning and I missed the call telling me they'd have to reschedule.... she has a broken foot and can't drive.... so I got out there and waited for them for nothing....

I did tell her that she could easily log in and confirm her event without even getting out of her PJ's to meet me. Including printing of the contract.

So we'll see.... I know she knows how to log in.

If not I do have another potential client for that date... but she can't meet me for 3 weeks when her fiance comes back from college.
 
Every Sweet 16 will be different. Some I've played nothing but straight hardcore rap and hip hop all night. Others, I've played everything from Journey, to Top 40 pop. I've learned that there is really no way to prepare for these events as each one will be different. Listen to the family, and more importantly the girl who's having the party. During one of these events, your goal is to keep the kids dancing all night, not the parents. That site kyle provided is a great resource, but as long as you have a good top 40 library, and everything in between, and have a good list from the girl, you will be fine.

Both parties interested in Aug. 1st got an email from me stating that there were other parties interested in the same date.... just giving them each a heads up.

Now I have a meeting with the first one scheduled for tomorrow at 2:30 and the second one has been logging into my system but thus far hasn't made a payment.

Out of fear of the online one posting a payment and out of fairness to the one that I'm meeting with I've changed the second persons password temporarily locking her out.

I'm almost scared to email her and tell her that I'm meeting with the first client and pending that outcome (99% sure she will book) her date may be spoken for.

I have 6 other clients in the same boat where another client is semi-serious or is just waiting for a convient time to meet.

I've been at this for only 3 years now and this is the very first year where I've had more than one possible clients for the same date.....

Where is that cloning device?
 
Well as much as I dreaded having to inform the other client that her date may already be booked, I was forced to because she emailed me first....

I told her that I have a meeting scheduled for Monday at 2:30 and pending the outcome of that meeting I'd let her know if I was still available.

I also told her if I'm not I could refer her to other great DJs in the area.

So if I can't accomodate her it's Aug. 1, 2009 in Centreville, MI if any of yous is interested I'll pass on the contact info.
