How would you spend $40,000?

Rick's right. 40 Gs can buy a lot of promotion. :)

That's where much of it would go. As Doug mentioned, the website would be first on the agenda. Get it upgraded and ranked high. Then we'd work on all the rental venues within miles... get our company name out there and into their heads.

We're already set, sound equipment-wise. We'd definately invest in new wireless Shure SM58 mics, lav sets and headsets. Maybe some LED uplighting. Then get photos of it all for the website and promo brochures. :)

I'd just end up turning it all over to Ben and just have him send me $40,000 worth of surprises.....:sqwink:

I got into an in depth conversation about what I would really buy...and I know exactly what I would buy......

and that is.................

All of your DJ businesses!

But $40,000 wouldn't go far in that endeavor. :sqwink:

I don't think you could even by a 1/4 of your business with a mear $40,000.00... LOL

DJMN have you ever seen Valeries Rig and setups? Dude we are talking a lot o' cash being needed to buy her out.

Okay, so here is the situation I'm in. I'm a busy guy with all the passion in the world to grow my DJ business. Many of you know that I'm also a high school teacher with 4 very active daughters - so my plate is full. I partner with JT nichol as much as I can but we live 45 minutes apart so true collaboration is difficult at best. I have one DJ woking under me right now but what I've been looking for is someone to share some of the "work" with, not necessarily gigs, but helping with the bigger bookings, marketing - all of that.

My business plan for the next 5 years is to get into the bigger clients...corporate, Proms, conventions - all of that.

After a few weeks of negotiations I have a secured a deal with a partner that is going to be AWESOME in the number of contacts he brings to the business, his personality is flawless for this business and he is extremely business savy (one of my weaknesses). We've negotiated a term of partnership, sort of a trial period of 5 years with a number of conditions built in to keep things profitable and fair for everyone.

So for now, we have $25,000 to invest in gear to get us prepared for a marketing campaign this spring.

I'm being so candid about all of this with everyone because I want some imput from the people in the buisness that I trust so much- ODJT.

Here are my thoughts initally.

1.We need to be able to fill large venues with some serious sound...not just volume but quality. I'm a big fan of JBL over the years and thinking of a SRX system. 4 dual 15 tops, 4 dual 18 bottoms, 6 amps.

2. Additional wedding set up, 2 JBL PRX 15's single PRX 18.

3. Outdoor/additional sound system set of the new JBL eons...something rugged and that we don't "care" about as much.

4. Add a couple lapel mics

5. possible LARGE screen (bigger than the 10 x 10's we have) for a center screen + a high def/high lumen/short throw projector

6. 5 ten foot sticks of global square truss to go with what we have for our look we're going for at Proms.

7. All the extra's, rack stuff, power conditioners, generator,

So...(big sigh of anticipation) what are your thoughts?

I don't want this to go in the partner vs. no partner thing cause I'm good on that decision. Nor do I want it to get into a gear bashing thread, I just really want to know what YOU would do, before I go on a pretty fun shopping spree

I also know 25K won't buy it all. Trying to invest in what's most important to the biz first.

$15K on a used van
$2K to get it all nice and decorated
$1800 for a Denon setup and case.
$2K for website development / SEO
$1K for a new laptop
$2K on lighting
$1K on truss
$2K on a LCD screen
$350 ( I think ) for OtsAV.

Leaves "about" 10K for the bank.

EDIT... so now seeing Knardini's update, none of this matters even a little bit. ;)

If we added what us djs own together as a whole...I bet we'd be a multi-million dollar business!

Do you want to go large or with several small wedding systems. You may want to consider that going large and using more single 15 SRX mains that the large system will break down in to many smaller systems very capable as powerfull wedding systems. At least that is the way I would look at it.

The 115's could be stacked and still give you the overall sound production of the 215's but give you several smaller systems when needed in any combination you have the desire to run.

Do yourself a big favor. If you need big, kickin' sound, you need to get yourself in front of some EV Eliminators and Eliminator subs pumping at high volume before you plunk down a bunch of money on JBL gear. You'll get gut churning bass and SERIOUS SPLs from the tops plus it will cost half of what JBL gear costs. I know people are comfortable with what they've used and know, but for the performance that they deliver, JBL is way overpriced.

Keep an open mind and give some other brands a listen before you buy. Yorkville and FBT are a couple other other brands you need to give a listen to too.

Wiz,

EV eliminators aren't even in the same class as Peavey SP2s and the SP2s don't come close to the JBL SRX series. You are talking the difference between a Yugo (EV Eliminator) and a Viper (JBL SRX) performance wise they don't even come close!

I trust my ears and those Eliminators pump. Look at the price of the SRX, SP2 and Eliminators. For around $4,000 you can have 4 Eliminators and 4 Eliminator subs.

I know you know more than me, but I set up smaller systems in a stadium that pumped out plenty of sound for a couple thousand people.

Just curious Thunder, when was the last time you heard a pair of Eliminators with a pair of Eliminator subs at a high volume level? I bet it wasn't recently.

I heard this combination recently at a bar and it was deafening.
2 mains, 2 subs.
You could FEEL the bass 30 feet back. I almost turned arou d and walked out the door because it was so loud.

One JBL SRX 715 is $1,359, so I'll ask the same question you asked, does he want speakers that can make up several powerful wedding systems?

A pair of Eliminators without subs can do just about any wedding of around 200-250 people. They kick ass.

thunder, I know from your previous posts that you love Peavey and don't think much of Electro Voice, you've made that perfectly clear. LOTS of professional sound people don't agree with you.

Another advantage of many EV products is you don't need as much amp power. Seems to me a SP2 and an Eliminator are pretty comparable except the Peavey needs a much more powerful amp to produce the same SPLs as the Eliminator. Is there a huge difference between 130 SPL and 131 SPL?

JBL is overpriced for the performance that they produce, I stand by my statement
. I feel the same way about Mackie. Over piced, over hyped, not worth the money for the performance delivered.

I like non entry level Peavey products, I just acknowledge that there are other good products available as well.

As far as the SRX goes, I'd rather buy 2.5 excellent quality Eliminators for the price of one SRX. Let's compare the SPLs.

Compare 2 Eliminators with Eliminator subs at about $2,000+ amps so say another $1,200+ cables=$3,400 to 2 Bose towers and 4 bass bins at $5,000. You can't, there is absolutely no comparison, the difference is night and day. the Eliminators would blow the Bose off the stage, you wouldn't even be able to hear the Bose.

But, they are two totally different animals and I believe they serve different purposes.
