My Gigaport Came Today!!!

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
I actually prefer to run everything thru my mixer. As least I have figured it out to the point where I can make almost anyone sound good.

I know mixing on a computer shouldn't be any different, but i can never for the life of me route everything properly. It always sounds like crap.

I'll stick with what I know until someone can figure out how to pound the info I need into my brain and make it stick.. :sqcool::sqbiggrin:

I wish I had went with the Gigaport instead. I'll make the switch on the new laptop.

So I need 2 of these 2 run Rockit at its best? ( So far I have mostly used Rockit for Dinner music and the occasional quick request or idea of what I want to play next ).

Depends on what you want out of it Son...

For some folks, one device is enough, for others, 4 or 5 work well. More a function of your mixing style, what other outputs you need, etc.

Rockit can handle pretty much any scenario you can throw at it :)

Remember..for the price of the Gagport, you can buy 4 or 5 of the TB's or Behringers. The Gigaport goes....so goes your sound....These cards can go anywhere and plug into any pc with no drivers req'd. I grab a behringer when I am doing a ceremony; no need for an external mixer or going direct to a powered speaker....I have 2 Behringers and two TB's.....I can plug/unplug at will....

Cap is correct. Hubs are a pain in the royal hieny! I use a Gigaport and have had trouble with hubs. Normally on my laptop, I do not use a hub and everything has worked fine for over two years as I have 4 ports. On the Gigaport I use two outputs "0" & "1" for Headphones, "2" & "3" for deck #1 and "4" & "5" for Deck #2. I like to do live mixing when not using an auto playlist.

For the price of 2 Mackie, you can buy 4 Jem Sound speakers.... ;)

So....

For the non-laptop DJs, could someone explain what these Gigaport or Berhringer audio interfaces actually allow you to do?

I am guessing that you have the music on your laptops, a software program to dj with (Rockit, PCDJ, etc.). Probably an external hard drive. And then there is the cards being talked about. They fit between the lappy and the mixer??

Judging from the discussion, there are a number of ways to use them.... Sort of confusing for a guy who hasn't seen a laptop setup. :sqerr:

I've used the Gigaport AG for last three years works with every PCDJ program I own and others never a problem.

I use inexpensive USB (Turtle beach) sound devices and NATIVE INSTRUMENTS sound cards as backups, but I'm very satisfied with my Gigaport until I see a better solution for me.

Good choice
 
Tunes Guys: The area of needed clarification is the prefacing nomenclature of the sound card.

Posters should be clarifying what type of sound card, internal or external.

Internal generally means PCI slot installs. External needs to be further described as to it's external interface/connection type to any computer, not just a laptop.

Is it an external PCMCIA, USB, Firewire, or [other] sound card?

My nod also goes to the GigaPortAG, which I believe is now called the GigaPortHD, and is an external sound card connected to any computer via a direct USB port.

That has not been my experience with one model of TB (I don't recall which one). In side by side testing, the TB was noticeably noisier at low and high output levels. In the middle, it was more difficult to hear differences.

I have not had a chance to use or hear the Behringer sound cards. The volume knob on the side leaves me to believe that the overall sound quality will not be as high as the Gigaport. The variable resisters used to do volume control are never very good...unless they are really expensive...something you won't find in a $20 retail component.

The TB is still a big step up from the onboard soundcard on the computer that I used to test. I certainly prefer the TB to the onboard soundcard. I suspect that the Behringer card is in the same basic ballpark. Had I not heard the Gigaport and the TB side by side, I might not have believed there was as much difference as there was.

There is a legitimate point raised about having a backup in case of failure. The Gigaport is about $100 (I paid $200 for mine 5 years ago...so be glad it's come down). In terms of overall reliability, the external hard drive is probably the most likely to die, the laptop is next, and the Gigaport is the least likely to die (no moving parts, no heating issues, very rugged plastic case for the electronics). Even at that point, compared to the cost of having a backup laptop, and a backup hard drive with your music, and a second license of the DJ software you use - an additional $100 for another sound card is not that bad.
 
Cap, and anyone else who have had trouble with a USB hub. If you plug the Gigaport directly to a USB but run a hub out of another USB (for other things like a mouse etc.) would you still have trouble running the Gigaport?.
