The last two days I've seen a DJ say that (Save The Last Dance For Me) is a inappropriate song for a B/G to have as their last dance song.

Another DJ thinks that (Thats What Friends Are For) is a wrong song for a Wedding Party dance because the Wedding Party doesn't know each other. Aren't they friends of the B/G?

As popular as Whitney Huston singing (I Will Always Love You) was for many B/G when the song came out, I've seen DJs say they won't play it at a Wedding Reception.

Are you guilty of over thinking a song and which one was it?

I play any song that a couple wants though I might explain inappropriate ones. I cant think of any off hand though. We are hired to cater to their needs or choose to bypass a gig if it compromises our reputation. I have never had to pass under such premise.

I know you asked me not to respond in your threads but since you used my thread as an example I am going to.

What you may think as over thinking to others might be putting in extra effort to help out their clients.

My original post on a song choice:

They want me to pick the song and the first thing that came to mind is "That's what friends are for" but they are not friends, they don't even know each other.

Not only that, they want me to invite other couples out after a minute so then we have actual couples dancing together.

I am lost here, I am still trying to figure out what is inapropriate about "Save The Last Dance For Me"!

I am having trouble putting the same twist on the song that Karl has managed to do.

I don't think there is a big problem with "That's what friends are for" I just wanted to see if someone had another idea. Yes, they are friends of the couple but when I bring out other couples, those couples are more than friends.

Just trying to see if there was a better song to use. Something that goes with actual couples and non couples.

I will probably use that song but just throwing it out there for others.

Im big on the "save the last dance for me" i'll do it if the customer wants it but not if they don't usually i'll explain it. I mean heck if the Bride & Groom are going to have an open relationship as the song suggests, im all for it. With some of the brides ive worked with id be the first in-line.

I do get guilty of overthinking. Last night we did the 2nd of the MDA prom events for the muscular dystrophy kids with the experience the week before i knew the directors of the camp wanted me to play WHATEVER the kids asked for.

I cringed at "Like you'll never see me again" by Alicia Keys but did it anyway also one of the graduating campers (18 years old) wanted "The Dance" by garth brooks which is a big memorial song around here especially after how big the "Dale Earnhardt" mix of the song was a few years back.

now you see Cesar last week I wouldve been like why the **** are you calling me out like that and today it was just a good question

It will im sure some schlep rock will come around here one day and we can battle it out..

So Cesar not a what would you do, but do you think that we shouldnt over think songs? I am steadfastly in the school that the customer is NOT always right. Sometimes on a rare occasion i am or someone with more experience is.

Think of the guy in the orange vest at home depot,
A majority of the customers seek them out to find something because they dont know the exact answer because, well they dont work at home depot. If people didnt have questions and knew instinctively everything they wanted then stores everywhere could save a lot of money, use a couple automated cash registers and a guy to watch the till, stock the shelves and unlock the doors.

If all of my brides were instinctively correct about their music there'd be a whole lot more ipod weddings. And we all know how those go..

Karl

Fair enough.

Thanks.

I just don't know how to put in to words the difference in over thinking a song and knowing not to play Closer by 9 Inch Nails or The Picture at a Wedding Reception when asked by a guest to play them.

I goggled the words to Save the last dance for me and I think your reaching pretty far to think that song is about cheating. The line about (Till the night is gone) depends on how you interpret it. Of course that song was written in a time period a little different then today.

C-
I would agree about nine inch nails for a request but what about if the B&G want it for whatever insane reason during dinner?

give the client what they want but im sure you'd get looks from the guests like WTF are you playing this...

If someone asks for a certain song, I will ask if they know what the song means (depending on if I know what the song means). If they don't, I explain it to them and let them choose. One thing I promise brides is I won't knowingly play cheating, heartache, breakup type songs. Something like Gold Digger, Irreplaceable, Lips of An Angel, etc. I also don't knowingly play any thing that may be considered offensive. However, if they want to hear it and have no problems with a song, I'll play it.

I once had a bride ask for Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" as their first dance. I said "Are you sure?" She explained that they met at the gentleman's club where she used to work.

The thought that popped into my head was she lost some of her looks or the club had low standards.

I won't knowingly play cheating, heartache, breakup type songs.
Um... "I Will Survive" is still a popular choice for weddings. Don't you play it? There are a ton of other songs that are almost as obvious, that get requested at weddings. Where do you draw the line?

(I'm not picking on you, but on that general attitude.)

When I consulted with my buddy and his fiance, she mentioned that her family was "very religious" and wanted no songs about sex. Then she told me that SWEAT (Inner Circle) is on the "must play" list.

I guess that it's all about tact; I mean, it would have been different, I suppose, if the chorus went, "Me put yu legs pon shoulda an' mek yu bawl & beg til yu sweat."

:sqlaugh:

I can't help over-thinking songs... I over-think EVERYTHING! I am still looking for a pill that will help, lol.

"Save The Last Dance" isn't really a big deal, it's not exactly about a last dance at a wedding but it's classic, familiar, and the idea is cute. I don't think anyone will be offended because in the song the singer assumes the partner will dance with a bunch of other people but requests that he/she save the LAST dance for them.

I don't play "I Will Always Love You" unless requested...and do cringe when people use it at weddings. It's a break-up song!!!

Lastly...I personally would hesitate to complain about anyone "over-thinking" something. I'm just glad people are thinking at all...in this day and age.

Are you guilty of over thinking a song and which one was it?

(1) A couple of weeks ago, the bride was named "Jessica" and I overheard some of her bridemaids calling her "Jessie".

During the dancing, I got the urge to play "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield.

(But I chickened out because the song is about a Guy named Jessie, its not gender correct)

To my surprise, one of the bridesmaids (or was it the MOH) came up to me and asked me if I had "Jessie's Girl".

She was shocked that I had it out and was ready to play it.

(Jessie's Girls = bridesmaids + MOH.........they had thought about requesting in advance but forgot to add to list)

(2) "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" (Pat Benatar)

My B/G on 8-08-08 were wonderful and had a playful sense of humor.
They had requested this song but didn't know when was a good time to play it.

Coincidentally, they also had not specified their Cake Cutting song.

I played "How Sweet It Is" (Marvin Gaye), then (just before they were about to cut the cake) I played "Hit Me With Your Best Shot".....which got a few laughs from the crowd.

Not surprisingly, they were NICE to each other and everyone went "Awwwwww!" (like they always do when there is no "Wipeout.")
