My wife found out, several months ago, that her best friend growing up has stage 5 cancer. They just got word last week that it has spread to her brain and said that there is nothing else that they can do for her. They did tell her that there is a world-renowned doctor in Texas that specializes in this field, but was afraid that she couldn't make the trip.
We got into a discussion about this last night and disagreed on what we would do.
My wife said that she would take our son out of school and spend every waking minute with us until her time was up. I said that I would risk the trip to Texas, take my son out of school to go with us, and fight it until the end came. What are your thoughts? Would you spend quality time with your family or fight it all the way???

If I understand the post, I guess what I would do is have your son stay in school, while you go visiting. Surely SOMEONE could watch him for an extended period of time under these conditions. But I don't think I am understanding the post.

First off my sympethies for your wife and her friend.

I have been very close to the proverbial white light more times than I want to count. I am a firm believer that when it's your time, it's your time and there's nothing you can do about it.

Depending on the amount of time I had left. There would be some family trips, a massive party with all my friends, and enjoy all the little things as much as I could til the day comes.

Spend time with my loved ones.

I would try to make the trip and spend some time with her friend.

I would also see if you can find someone to watch your son as well.

I don't know what your situation is like...as far as work and all, but a good visit with her would be a great idea. Your wife and this friend could spend some much desired time together.

Whatever you do, make sure you will never regret doing what you believe is right in your heart. I lost a great friend last year in an auto accident, and I regret not catching up with him when I had the chance. :sqfrown:

I don't think the question is about her friend. It is "What would you do if you were in this situation"

I would probably spend as much time with my family. I wouldn't want to burden my family with more medical bills. I assume this Dr. doesn't come cheap and if it is experimental, insurance probably wouldn't pay for it.

Clarification --- what we would do if it happened to one of us; sorry!!!

I think I would probably return to where I was born, become a recluse, grow my hair as long as I like, work hard, drink heavy, and play lots of frisbee with my dog... ;)

Oh forgot -- just to make it more fun, I'd get Lyme a few times... :sqerr:

The hardest part, yet I believe the key to survival, is to take your mind off it, and put it to use doing something else... For me, work is the key (rum doesn't hurt either) :)

Just my 2 cents, but by stage 5, I would be ready and willing to die. And NO, do not waste money on me. Put a bullet in me, and take me to the woods so the animals can feed on me.... and I mean that, but know that it won't happen this way.

My sympathies to your wife Eddie. My wife is dealing with her grandmother being in the late stages of cancer too. It has prompted me to appreciate this song as of late:

YouTube- Thriving Ivory - Angels on the Moon

I guess we are all dying, some just faster than others, so we should live every day as though we were dying.

My moms side of the family has had 7 of the nine kids die of cancer. My Aunt Louise a wonderful christian woman got rid of it for a time and it returned. They sold there house and had plans to fifth wheel around the country as she found out she had a second bout of the cancer. She then had to stay close to home for 6 months suffering through treatment and finally decided if she was going to die she was not going to suffer the treatments and go on the road. She made it 6 more months and enjoyed it as much as possible til nearly the end. My mom bought a rose bush and named it Louise in her honor. Aunt Louise died but held some lasting memories to her end. I would have to say no to the Texas treatment unless it was assured life extension without pain from the treatments. I would want to live like there is no tomorrow. Im with Rick on this one. I am going to ORegon to see my Daughter graduate next month and hope to see my son fight in the States soon.

I have not read any of the other responses:

If it were me I would not wish to disrupt my families lives and spend every waking minute with them... think about it you are just a shell of who you were do you really want your family to remember you that way?

Of course if I were able to make the trip then that's what we would do... but, once in the new town the kid would be enrolled in school and would continue on as a kid and not my caretaker... no thank you...
