I like the idea, however, in reality, is a new title to the same group of people really make any difference? I mean, I would love to see more of various events (that could, yes, be posted in the gig forum), but the same people are going to carry the same arguments across the borders so-to-speak, so I am hesitant of the necessity or feasibility.

and +1 for Val. She said so eloquently what I was trying to say. :)

Edit:
Val said it so well that I broke my own pet peeve rule about double posting. :D

The difference I can see for this Sub Forum is that it can hold more substance for seasoned pros. Not the kind of DJs .....cross that...folks..... who don't even know how to properly use a "Y" Connector. It will be open to all and even the newbies can learn a thing or two.

I am a bit tired of seeing Gig Report Pics of only people/audience who I do not know. I would rather see pics of the DJ setups and the entire room before the Gig starts then also during the Gig. A bunch of shoeless or people in flip flops dancing does not teach me anything!

For example, I am not in a band nor do I do touring stages but yet I subscribe to several Trade Magazines geared towards those Music Professionals in that Industry and every so often I learn a thing or two from them.

Val makes a good point and I tend to agree.

Aside from the fact that a DJ forum is unlikely to attract professional soundmen and women, there's the likelihood of such a narrow-based venue becoming similar to the Bose wars.

I sure remember that. Every time the name was mentioned we had another war on our hands. We had one or two members who rode herd and dominated every Bose thread with authoritarian nonsense. Anyone who disagreed was attacked. It served no purpose other than to create a split and cause good members to leave. We don't need any more of that here.

While we have some experienced soundmen aboard ~ Scott McKinney, Steve (Thunder) and Cclark to name a few, we don't have them in sufficient numbers to support a balanced forum specifically for live sound.

Tell ya what ~ if you'd like to discuss live sound online (and compare measurements of a certain part of the male anatomy at the same time) log in to Harmony Central. That ought to keep you busy for awhile. ;)

Or you can log in to ProSoundWeb where the big dogs play. :)

I don't disagree with you, but if those who don't know how to properly use a Y cord don't KNOW they don't properly know....then they will still contribute their 2 cents as well, causing the same frustrations you have now, only in a different forum. Who should moderate who is 'smart enough' to post there?

What's the difference between a "novice" and "an old dog" attempting to learn? Both seek knowledge, but one has more experience in a variety of areas, less in the technical aspects of how equipment interact.

I, for one, believe that once the question has been thoroughly disected for the "newby" and maybe even the "old dog" that same question shouldn't come up again...from the same two inquirers.

Often times DJs with little tech experience learn by trial and error. The reasoning behind why it worked just isn't known to them. In those cases the answers are like "Sound/Equipment 101" class.

Maybe there needs to be such a thread for just that...dedicated to the them that truly don't know...or have forgotten. :) Then, when someone inquires about something in the "Sub" thread, they could be refered to the "Sound/Equipment 101" thread where those of us who know the answers could pass along their knowledge.

Them thar are my thoughts on the subject.

Maybe We Do Need A Sticky Instead.

I thought about this long and hard and what I am about to state is not meant for everyone or any one person in particular. The reason why some people enter into DJing is because they see it as an easy way to make money. As we all know, the Digital age made that a no brainer. What some failed to realize is that the title calls for some level of knowledge of basic electronics.

The public for the most part does not have a clue of what is good sound vs what is bad sound, however when they hear real good sound they know it. If DJs strive more for that instead of trying to get by on the bare minimum it would be a good thing. I admire some of the chaps here who take the time to ask questions and spend good money on good gear. This course of action gives a lot of credibility to the Industry.

If there isn't going to be a Sub Forum maybe we can have a Sticky called Tools Of The Trade. In that sticky we can have permanent references to Instructional Books, Videos, Explanation of Certain types of gear, and how they are used and applied, links to information etc. I think the inexperienced and newbies can learn a lot from it.

Every week we can spotlight a new piece of gear and have discussions on it. I don't have a problem sharing because I myself am not beyond learning. Its like driving....one may have had a Drivers License for many years and driving the same car, however if that person bought a brand new car, they would have to learn the position of all the controls etc....same difference.

How Do We Do This?

Should a Thread in a Sticky be for discussion or just factual information?

For example, let us discuss the definitions of the different classes of amplifiers (Not Brands) and their applications.
Do we do the discussions in "Gear Heads" then put the summary and reference links (Books & Videos) in the Sticky or do both in the Sticky?

What are your thoughts?

Been there for a few years already...Great advice Fred.
Most anything you could question has already been discussed there numerous times. And those cat's have the newest, latest gear on the road and tested before the general public even knows about it.

I just registered! It looks like my cup o' tea. I know I will be viewed upon as a newbie and with suspicion however I have a thick hide and I am anxious to jump right in!

Thats a whole different ballgame over there. :triwink:
Yup. PSW is not just another chat board. It is one of the more informational sites on the Web for professional sound reinforcement.

At PSW, sometimes the less one says, the better. Over there it's about topic knowlege, credentials and endorsements, not post count. :)

yea, I have been on prosoundweb for a few years...mostly just to read.

read the study hall, lots of good articles. the forum is directly here: srforums.prosoundweb.com

more than thick skin required if you post...get a bulletproof jacket!

I couldn't agree with you more!!!!!!!

What ever you do DO NOT include the letters "DJ" anywhere in your post's...

They really have a dis-like for dj's there. And if you do post...Like has been said before, You better know what your talking about...or you'll be eaten alive
