Wireless Mics

So I have needed a wireless mic for a while, but it is just one of those things i've been putting off. For a larger monthly gig I am in the process of booking (middle school dance) and a bat mitzvah I have booked I need one for sure. For a quality mic, they are expensive as hell and that bugs me, making me want to pay for a cheaper one but, I don't want it to cut out in the middle of a show or worse ceremony with a guest speaking.

My question is simple, whats the cheapest wireless mic system I can buy, but have the best quality? I want to stay away from brands like Nady and Gemini.

I was looking around and found the Sennheiser Freeport series, while still kind of expensive ($200 for the FP35) it was the cheapest from any quality brand I could find with my limited knowledge of wireless mics.

I have the Gemini and it is very worthy and yes killer price. The only issue and theres the BUT. Handling noise is a bit dicey on occasion for clients etc. I havent any problem with it but others have.
 
this summer I took it almost three hundred yds up a hil outside my venue and spoke clearly to my inside guy letting him know the bride and grooms status. Clear as if I were inside the joint. 2 AA batteries last six months.
 
Something to bear in mind with the Senns ~ they are non-coloring elements. What goes in is what comes out. Senn offers a nice element. Just remember that they don't "color" the nuances of vocals. :)

I shudder whenever someone says "good" and "cheap" in the same sentence. You'll never get more than you pay for. Many of the OEM pieces are rebranded Nady elements and receivers. I wouldn't load a Nady if it was free.

For my part, I wanted a good quality vocal UHF handheld and decided upon the Shure SM58 with a UT4 diversity receiver. We got it at the DJ Times expo in AC for around $200.00.

I am very glad we did. This unit has excellent vocal reproduction and feedback rejection. No hum, no buzz, no clicks. And no handling noise. It transmits through thick brick walls, all over the place with no dropouts and no interference.

We've had speakers walk away while singing or speaking. They were over 70 feet away and we still had 'em loud and clear.

Don't buy cheap. Buy the good stuff now and you won't have to worry about replacing it later, lol. :)
 
Just like a few said here, I use a set of Dual Gemini Wireless Mics and I love them. The batteries last FOREVER. I get great range, at a VERY reasonable price. Sure, you can pay $350 for Shure and get top quality, but I am happy with my Geminis.

The Gemini system I purchased, after using it for a good while, I sold to a friend of mine and he loves it.

Commenting on what Fred said above - I have 2 of the Sennheiser systems - both headset units. One is about 6 years old and is the original e100 series. The other is only about a year old and is the newer ew100 evolution series. The sound is un-colored and natural.

Both of these units are built like tanks - and they should be at $500 bucks each.
The receiver units have 1248 selectable frequencies each, squelch control, selectable decibel cut rates, 1/4" and XLR outputs. Again, you get what you pay for - and neither of these units has ever given me a moments worth of trouble.
 
The Sennehiser Freeports can't be found anywhere. I was trying to buy a number of them a few months ago for our karaoke systems but they are no longer on the market from what I can tell.

If someone knows where I can find them I'd like to pick up 4.

Wen they dropped the proce from $199 to $129 they just didn't exist anymore.

First let me clarify that I am aware that good wireless Mics can go for over $500. $200 isn't that big a deal for me, I just wanted to know if it was a good mic because $200 still is a lot of money, and I want to have a good product for my $200. Because of all the good feeback on the Freeport Mic, I'm leaning to it, but if it was between that $100 AKG mic, and the Sennheiser Freeport for say $150, what would you do?

Its also nice to know gemini makes decient wireless mics. I have used gemini in the past (dual CD Player) and had no issues, although I will admit their speaker line could use some serious help...

They are listed on Musicians Friend and the Guitar Center website for $199, as well as an active product on the Sennheiser website.

I'm sure either mic is comparable. I can speak from experience that the AKG WMS 40 is reliable and has been long lasting. I've not had any interference with it within 75 yards or so.
 
The Shure 58 with UT4 diversity receivers are also available on eBay in your price range (last time I looked, anyhow).

Gemini is an OEM reseller. Shure is not. :)
 
I have been using Shure TV58Ds for YEARS with no issues. You can probably find them in the $229 range or better if you shop. Yes, they are VHF, not UHF, but this has never presented a problem to me in over 2300 performances with them...and I dont even extend the aerials!
