Windows 10 Upgrade Released Today - Beta Testers Opinions, Please?

My 68 year old Mom still uses a Desktop with Windows XP on it. My younger brother has had to do a system restore, and cleansing on it multiple times over the years. I believe my brother made the desktop machine for her back in 2005, and he had to replace the mother board once in it a few years ago...it had a lot of ram, and HD space in it for the time. She also has an older flatscreen 20" monitor...before the HD screens came out. She plays candy crush and Farmville all day on that thing...every day. If she is not watching soap operas, or cooking...she is on the computer playing those two facebook games. She is addicted to them.

She does not want to part with that computer though, lol. I guess she will keep using it until it really crashes hard.

Word to the wise - if you have XP machines, they need to go offline. Every day that passes without security updates, leaves those systems more vulnerable. Win98 SE at retirement, had 600,000 known flaws. You can bet XP has some serious holes.

I am debating if I should attempt to upgrade my laptops that I use for deejaying. I don't want to screw anything up as I have a wedding upcoming Saturday. ...I hate "the fear" of doing operating system upgrades...especially if the machine isn't a high end machine under 1 year old.

I am considering just purchasing a new laptop in the next month or so (which would have windows 10 installed) as well. ...My secondary Toshiba Lapto is a low end machine with windows 7 and it is running WAY, WAY SLOW. ...I have come to question it's viability as being even a back up laptop for deejaying. It's so slow to run programs or do anything, it's painful! It's a cheap Celeron Processor, and only 2 gb of ram, and I run AVG constantly on it since it got screwed up by a bad virus a couple years back. It's never been the same since that Virus attacked it.

My gig machines have never been connected to the internet except for down loading or for registering my DJ related software. They will not be upgraded.

+1 If it ain't broke don't fix it. Who knows what kind of issues Windows 10 could introduce to your DJ software. If you're stable on 7 and the machines don't connect to the internet stay on 7.

6 months out, if your software says it's compatible with W10, upgrade if you feel you'll see a benefit. For my .02, I wouldn't upgrade a single use system. If you're just using DJ software you're probably not using any of the underlying Window's features thus no need to upgrade.

As for your Celeron based system - I'd make it a toy for the kids. Celeron's have been crap since they came out. They don't handle doing anything well forget about media.

Yeah, my Celeron based Toshiba $299 Laptop from Best Buy that I bought in 2011 needs to be replaced. I actually let my son play with it a couple days ago, and he said "Daddy, this computer is too slow, buy a new one!" lol

I upgraded a laptop. It was a windows 8 64 bit computer. Works ok, but I get error messages at start up....could not start xxxx program because msvcp100.dll is missing Then it says msvcr100 is missing too.

I searched and found them under system 32 folder. I copied it and pasted them in syswow64. Now the error message says...a problem occurred when trying to start xxxxx

The programs that won't start appear to be Apple. Ones an iCloud thing, and the other says Apple something

UPdate....Complete FAILURE!

I figured my backup laptop (and newest computer) would be a good one to try the update on. From win 8.1 to 10...upgrade installed fine.

But as for it running? Hells no. VERY VERY VERY VERY slow. I htought my old XP box was slow...not even close. Slow as in loading ANY program - chrome, firefox, itunes, even explorer or such. The search feature sucks "search computer and web"...I put in 'uninstall' and got web results...why not the 'uninstall' on the computer FIRST? Useless feature.

And the deal breaker (besides way too slow to use) was VDJ won't run. OK, it runs, but all I get for output is BBBBBUUUUUZZZZZZZZ.

So I may let my kids try it on their computer but I"m going to 10 when forced to.

BTW, you can rollback/uninstall within 30 days of upgrading. This worked well and I highly recommend it!

My upgrade failed on my HP dv-9000 due to the graphics driver. Win 10's driver won't allow the proper resolution and HP/Nvidia collaborative drivers are not available. I will wait for Win 10 SP1 and some clever folks to once again find a way to dump the cumbersome, overbearing, scattered GUI with a old skool Windows Classic Menu program option.

Looks like the upgrade kina sucks?

I will wait to buy a laptop with WIN10 already installed. I don't want to screw anything up on my current machine.

The secret is to do the inplace upgrade first. After the upgrade, Microsoft will have your registration details for that machine registered for you online. After that you can do a clean install, and because your machine is already registered, you won't need the registration codes to activate.

I have now done upgrades to 6 machines, and then there is my preview machine. I have just 1 system yet to upgrade. It's an i5 system that runs especially slow. Thinking about installing an SSD drive in it after the upgrade. Or perhaps I'll do that first, then upgrade after I set a baseline test. with it's installed windows 7 OS.

my son did win 10 upgrade...it was terrible (slow, incompatible) and he rolled it back.
Talked to a photographer that did it...computer is dead slow now..she's rolling back.

I got a new laptop and upgraded before doing anything else - all seems fine. I get some lagging in typing at times..but it's new laptop, updating and such so I'm not blaming win 10 yet.

It did reboot during a wedding last night...but any windows machine can do that. So far all software has worked fine.

From what I've read if you do a CLEAN install or upgrade (wipe your computer and start over) then you'll be fine as you reinstall all your software. Upgrading a running computer...lots of people have issues.

As for win 10 vs...something else? Annoying win 8.1 issues are gone. the search box in the start bar is useless..less than useless. gonna find a way to make it go away just so I don't have to look at it.

Still holding off on upgrading, now, I am so confused with W10, if you do a clean install, dont you need to have the key for W10?
 
Did the upgrade a few weeks back and really really liked it over 8.1. Then this weekend the Win 10 went all wonky and I was getting errors every reboot to the point it became unusuable. tried to do a recovery back to the old OS only to find the Win 10 upgrade destroyed the recovery partition - cannot go backward I guess. Try as I might I could not get the old OS back up and running (don't think it was a corrupt drive but it is possible) - I think the MBR went to pot and the thing was dead in the water. Tried recovery disk by DVD but the crappy thing about the N56VJ I am finding is you need the OS to get at the BIOS - when I did get there the new OS had taken over and would not allow boot from optical drive. Goof thing I got the extended warranty so shipped it off today to likely get a drive. I feigned it was an HD failure to get it replaced/fixed under warranty. When I get it back I will not go back to Win 10 as it is my primary VJ laptop. Good thing I have a couple of backups....
Still using Win 10 on a couple home computers with (so far) no issues but now I am not so confident with it....
