All my machines are being image backed up today, in preparation for tomorrow's RC release...
BTW, IMHO, those who hate Vista, are gonna hate Win7 even more -- it's Vista on steroids
Seeing 7 run it seems to be a little smoother and user friendly than Vista but still not as quick as XP on the same machines. It requires a litle more horsepower than Vista or XP so if you are running old machines don't bother or you will really dislike it

I'm gonna dive into Windows 7 Tuesday too. I ran the beta for a bit but didn't like the idea of running a beta for a production machine. The RC should be much more secure.
Since last night I've been running this online backup service I subscribed to. I'm only uploading 8GB and it's gonna take until Tuesday afternoon. High Speed online my arse..The connection should asynchronous.

Gotta get yerself a NAS Danno -- mine backs up all my machines nightly to a redundant X-RAID array, then backs itself up to a WD Passport when it's done.
About $500 total for everything (the NAS, two new 1TB drives, and a 500 GB Passport) -- but peace of mind is priceless

All joking aside I'd love too but the only part of computers that scares me is networking. I never know how to set permissions so that just my user accounts can access certain files. Then let files like my pictures be accessed by any other user account but not modified. I almost bought myself one of those Apple Time Capsule's it's a NAS + Router/wifi station all in one but thought the better of it with the Apple Tax.
For now I've got a big Lacie external sitting next to my desktop. It has two partitions, one for Window's to do automatic backups on, with it's build in backup/restore center and another partition for where I drag and drop my folders for backup purposes. Then about once a week when I do the manual drag and drop backup, I wipe all my folders on the laptop and copy over the iles from the backup. So all files are replicated 3 times really. I doubt I'm going to have 3 HD failures at once.
Now, I got the dropbox thing I mentioned in another thread which is another safe guard.

If yer the only user on premises, it's simple -- just ok everything
I'm behind dual hardware firewalls, so I don't worry about anything from the outside. The NAS is a Linux box, and was simple to setup, and has a pretty cool interface. I don't allow access to my net from the outside world -- not even me

For the life of me, I just can't get into the OS-X mindset.
I got my Mac about a year or so ago, and although I figured out how to work it, it just doesn't seem intuitive to me...
And them damn things bouncing around on the screen, annoy the Hell outta me :sqerr:
My brain doesn't think like a Mac -- it's too busy doing productive stuff. Besides, I hate foo-foo wine drinks -- I drink beer and whiskey (warm or cold)
Well I'll admit it - I still have a PC with XP Pro - b/c that's the only way to get Denon's Music Manager to work.

I love Denon hardware -- but whoever does their software, needs a good, swift kick in the ass!
Probably be nice if they got the Windows version to work right, before they mess up the Mac side as well... :sqerr:
Based on what I've seen -- they need to get the folks who write the firmware/software, together with the folks that design the hardware.
Right now, they appear to be on two different sides of the planet, and don't speak the same language. So much for outsourcing...
I will be switching and will be building a touch screen machine to us as a controller less system. Most people dont know that Win7 is a multi touch system with the proper screen. With multitouch and VDJ life will be very easy just one less thing to bring (my RMX) although I will probally bring it for a while as a a backup.

Well, I got one machine switched over -- an older Dell Latitude D600.
Did a format and clean install. Install was very quick, about 20 minutes.
It's internal sound card no longer works, and it cannot do the driver update (it found it, it just fails every time). So, I threw on a Behringer sound card, came up right away.
Lots of user access control (ACL) issues already, best I can tell. :sqerr:
It doesn't ask you like Vista did -- it assumes (that's what you guys get for complaining about Vista)
This is gonna be a support nightmare for developers (and a lot of work)...
Should have embraced Vista -- it works fine

so are you saying don't jump on Windows 7 just yet... maybe wait for SP1 before updating any machines?
Well, Win7 hasn't been released yet (this is RC1 -- Release Candidate 1) -- it will probably actually release around the end of the year.
This version is for us developers and final beta testers, to see what we are up against (and for major final beta work).
This isn't the version yer average Joe will get, and unless yer prepared to do yer own support, I wouldn't jump on it. MS has said plainly, they won't support RC1. Also, anything you do with it, if connected -- gets sent back to the Mothership for analysis.
Like I said -- this is for developers, and those who are not faint of heart...
