I keep asking about this on the ADJ forum as that seems to be there go to on every "new" light this year, let just put a laser on something and call it new and exciting???? I never get a response
It's the reason I have no use for all the Swarm FX and similar devices .. frikkin' laser beams ...

I like aiming at the ceiling too especially if it's a white ceiling with some character. But the OP wants to wash the dance floor…. with lighting.
Was this a really high ceiling? Because I've been thinking for lights aimed at the ceiling maybe they should be on the floor - uplighting, but not against a wall. Either that or not cranking the tripod up so high.
I had a low ceiling recently and pointed two fixtures at the ceiling and two at the floor. It turned out good, but I was thinking - why not just set the ceiling fixtures on the floor?

Yep, having them pointed at peoples eyes has always been a pet peeve of mine.
Been to too many events over the years as a guest where lights were pointed pretty much horizontally so all the people sitting down at the tables opposite the dj got the full blinding effect.
Imo, this is just as much the reason why people leave events early as playing bad or too loud music is.
Glad there are some creative responses here on how to achieve a good indirect ambient lighting atmosphere where low height stands or ceilings are in use.

I ended up testing my concept for the first time at my gig last night, this is how it ended up looking:

I thought it worked pretty well. I kept the downlight on that static pinkish purple through dinner and a speech, and then as we moved into dancing I set it into a fade. The uplights were doing a slow fade back and forth between the dark blue and aqua blue all night.
