Whats The Big Deal With iTunes

I read of so many DJs having issues with iTunes. I have never bought anything from iTunes so I don't have those experiences. I get most of my music I need direct from the labels and other stuff I want I purchase from Amazon. I tag and categorize all songs before placing them in my Hard Drive----> Music Library------> Music Folders (Genres). When that is done, I add them to my DJ Software/Traktor Collection. I can pull up/search anything by Song, Artist, Genre, Recently Added etc.
What is the big difference doing it that way vs the iTunes way? What are the benefits of using iTunes?

You get to drink their kool aid, buy expensive stuff in really nice cardboard boxes, and carry a man purse... yorofl:


I really don't know what the fascination is, because I find it unintuitive, a resource hog, and dumbing down the population. It wreaks havoc with native Windows software (which was probably their point). Best guess -- it's get's people to buy Apple products, because it doesn't work right on Windows... ;)
 
I believe that you are right. Its a kind of "Follow the leader" syndrome. You often hear "Thats what everyone is using!". Thank God I am not a follower.:trirolleyes:

No "Itunes" here. Never will be. Life is good!

There's nothing inherently wrong with iTunes. It all comes down to how you use it. The area most people get in trouble is buying music from the iTunes store (note: you do not ever have to buy anything from Apple to use iTunes). The files come down with rights management embedded. If you play from iTunes or if your DJ software of choice can read from the iTunes library directly, there may not be an issue. If you want the most portable files, you need to buy the music elsewhere (Amazon, pools, service), rip you own CDs, or burn CDs from iTunes and then re-rip them (which will cause loss of fidelity).

iTunes is necessary (not absolutely, but realistically) to manage iPhones and iPods, otherwise, it's just a simple file manager, though to be honest, I did emergency DJ with it, as I had a failure on my main laptop and didn't realize I brought the wrong backup laptop.

<edit> As noted below, I am incorrect that rights management is still embedded, though most of my iTunes collected songs are pre-2009, so they still are drm protected. I would need to convert them to remove the drm. The files are, however, in .aac format, which though readable on many devices, isn't as universal as .mp3.
 
iTunes is a necessary evil if you have an iProduct. You dont have to buy your tunes from Apple though luckally your iProduct can play the more friendly and popular mp3 music file.
 
Steve 149.......Itunes has not had DRM protected files for at least 2 or more years.....Unlike Amazon and other sites, the music you buy is not .mp3 but .mp4 (or .m4p....). It's not protected and dos not contain any drm.

You have to convert it to an .mp3;' that's done easily within I tunes. You don't have to burn cd's, re-rip......that was back in prehistoric times.

I've never had an issue with I tunes; Quick time is another story....I don't know why so many have issues....

As I said, in Canada, we have very little choice when it comes to purchasing music online (amazon does not sell digital here)

ABC, NBC, CBS, cable TV, satellite TV, etc. are all in deep doo doo in the coming years. Some people don't want to wait for next week's episode of their favorite show, they want to watch it now and with streaming they can do that. People watch what us old timers call "TV" on their laptops. Apple TV and embedded internet displays bring that to the bigger screens.

The only constant thing in this world is change.

Who is (and who is going to pay for) producing this online content? Everyone wants this stuff for free but free dont pay the bills to produce shows. Two big long running daytime shows was pulled because it was to costly for the network to produce they were to be put online but no one wanted to pay the actors what they were worth.

I don't know what you mean by "right", but iTunes is just fine on a PC... I run it and Rockit on the same netbook for some events.
 
Apple is becoming like Nike they know abuse is going on at their factories but only do something about it when there is media spotlight, I do not know why people like Apple as a company so much when most or all of its manufacturing is done in sweatshops and suicide laden factories.
 
I get a lot of my songs from Itunes.
The key is to take the I-tune file & convert it to a MP3 & move it elsewhere.
I want nothing to do with ITunes files. Once you convert it, you can do whatever you want with it.
