Ausumm your brain shouldn't hurt. I said what I meant. I'm not willing to do a wedding for $250.00. It's just that simple. If someone else chooses to do a wedding for that price be my guest.

I'm sorry I asked the question. I didn't know it was going to start a riot on here. I just wanted clarity since Jimmy directed his comment at me. Now a major reason today I wouldn't do a wedding for $250.00 today is because as a whole I know it would hurt us in this business. Please keep an open mind. The reason being is that I'm damn good at performing a wedding. I have the experience and know how to do a great job I'll say 95% of the time. I won't say 100% because as most know on here there is bound to be a wedding where for whatever reason things just don't work and it's not always the DJ's fault.
The reason why I said me doing a wedding for $250.00 would hurt this business as a whole is because with a bride getting such great service why would they look to pay anything more then that when they can get the great service I provide. Remember I said as a whole and not just you alone. If I were to do a wedding for that price I would show up wearing jeans and a t shirt that I had made with my DJ name and company info. I know everyone will say that would be tacky but if a bride doesn't give a damn about her wedding then why should I.

With amazing consistency, I find that cheap weddings are often followed by non-appreciative, often abusive B&Gs (and family). The people that I charge the most are respectful and express their appreciation more.
That is one of the biggest lines of bull**** that has ever been posted here.

Regardless of what a bride thinks about her own wedding, the way you present yourself reflects on YOU and the service YOU provide, not her event. Until you understand that you're competing with yourself, and always trying to do better, your rates will go nowhere.
You said you used minimal gear to do each of those weddings. What minimal gear did you use to do those weddings?
Fender PD250 passport system and 1 -3 line 6 wireless lav / handheld mics and my IPod for music play back usually consist of playing processional maybe 2 songs during ceremony and playing recessional, plus I charge a travel fee if more than 30 miles from my office
Mr. Dim Bulb, he's talking about ceremony-only. I use a single-speaker for those setups and you can be in and out in 5 minutes.
Sorry I missed that part. I'm talking about doing a reception and not just the ceremony. I don't blame him for doing that. That's fine. I could do one of those for $250.00. Not a whole reception. My setup for that would be 1 powered top on a stand with my controller and cordless mic. That's how I would have to do it since I don't have the passport system and I don't use CD's any more. Strickly working a computer today. I think my partner has a dual CD player still if he hasn't sold it. I know he has a Numark controller that he can also play CD's. DJCC what I posted is not a line of BS sir. I've seen on craigslist brides looking to book a DJ to do their wedding for $250.00-$300.00. Most will say they don't want a true professional to do their wedding but you can be someone starting out. Meaning they don't want someone that is going to quote them more then that. Thus the reason for them stating the DJ doesn't have to be a polished professional. Now DJCC I don't know you and you don't know me but I certainly can tell you my skills in handling a wedding is up pal. Now the last time I did a wedding was back in February and trust me I didn't do it for $250.00. That's my reason today to looking into doing more.
I've done exactly 1 of those events, mid-day. Ceremony + Reception, but the reception was literally 45 mins of dinner, 1st dance and I was there a total of 2 hrs, including setup/teardown. Left from that and did a $1500 reception + uplighting that evening. I'd love to get some of those mid-day, ceremony-only things.
It's becoming more and more prevalent for me, I will have 12 of them this year at $300, I usually do them my self and then go do our standing bar gig with our system that's semi-permanently installed at $300 a night, so a $600 day with very little effort plus my take of whatever the other 2 guys are workin.

lets state some facts.
* There will always be a demand for $250 weddings dj's, because there will always be those that CAN NOT afford more then $250.
* The fact that someone is doing weddings for $250 IS NOT hurting "us" in this business, unless you are doing $275 weddings and the other guy is getting all your gigs.
* You have done ONE wedding this year. I think that one speaks for itself. On the other hand I have done 19 so far this year, with 14 more to go, so far.
* You worry to much about getting a wedding so that you can take pictures to get more weddings.....kinda like the chicken/egg question.
* Yes, pictures can help you get bookings, but more so are true references.
* You LIE to your prospective clients on your web site because you advertise services that YOU don't have to offer. Do you tell them that you are sub-contracting those services out?
Stop worrying about pictures, craigslist, and $250 wedding dj's.
Get yourself a business plan & marketing plan together.
Get your website together, if the person working on your website is not doing the job in a timely manner, fire his ass!!!!
Stop trying to sell services that YOU don't have to offer, or be upfront and tell them that your are outsourcing those items.
Get a base pricing plan together.
