What does a decent turntable cost?

Do you think the visual spect of having 1200's is important to what I will be using them for?
If Retro is an important aspect of your branding, then yes.

Tech 12s are iconic and even non DJ types recognize them as the bomb shizzle.

Not to mention the quality playback and durability of the established wheels of steel.

I regret selling up my first set of 12hunnys.

Now, do I think you need TTs to deliver a quality retro show, HELL NO.

.....

I should have my next set of 1200's before August. I will bring them to Jam/Picnic and you will love them.

Loooking forward to it John.

retro would be two of those and a coffin. With no disrespect intended Chuck what will the purpose of this be used. Is it not to portray a retro visual? If not many of these guys will be spinning MP3's and somewhat negating the requirement for proper old school lighting. Will this matter to the client? Johnny is the most real retro guy with his system. He even uses a cowbell.

Not musically, I agree. But part of my concept involves the look and feel of these events as well. These Retro parties are actaully more in terms of physical labor than any other events I do, but to me, it is worth it. Plus, I just have a blast playing the music.

Sure, but let's be realistic. Not everybody can provide all that stuff, so I am asking people just to do the best they can. Honestly, since many people are behind facades these days, I think that the two biggest factors in Retro are the music and the lights. Beyond that, IMO, is going way above and beyond, IMO.

A cowbell.... hmmmn... thinking.... thinking....

hmm some of your department stores actually have fake filler units to make the furinture look proper. Ikea has amps TVs and even turntables which almost look real but are like movie set fakes. weighing as much as those boulders captain kirk tosses.

Thinking about it maybe I should hols onto mine! LOL

If I hadn't sold off the other one to a DJ who needed it desparetely I wouldn't even think about selling this one.

Best place to find 'em is on Craigslist.

A lot of starving Bedroom DJs with TT's to sell for Xmas $$$.

Back when I was starting out (late 80's and early 90's) used to always get the best deals on Crest/Crown Amps or used gear, in the papers-- this was before CL.

The only reason I would go to CL is to buy/sell gear.

Recently, I saw a pair of Technics 1200's in Sacramento for $500.

is your hear set on buying Tech. 1200's?

i can recommend cheaper turntables that will do the same function, and have just as much, if not more torque...models by numark, stanton etc.

The numark tt-500 is a great bet
the Numark tt-200 is decent, and with proper "scratch dj" type slipmats you will be able to dj just fine....

dont forget to pick up extra needles and carts (just in case)

If you can get a serial number do a search for "Determining the age of an SL-1200" to get to the wikipedia article.
That way you'll at least know how old they are.
They look good in the pics.

Well, it is probably a good thing I didn't buy one... a package came to the house yesterday. It is the shape of a turntable, but larger. My wife has been hounding me about what to get me for Christmas... I kind of said a turntable but I never figured that she would get one because whe wouldn't know what to get.

I guess in 5 days I will see if I am correct, but I bet I am.

These went for $620 including shipping.

I was about to write how stupid it is to buy a used turntable from eBay for that much instead of buyin a new one with a warranty, but then I reread the statement and realised how stupid I was. So. I'm not going to write anything.

Ya know what Johnny? In a sense they probably were a really good deal because they had custom flight cases for them.... I bet that those cases were about $150 each when new. The actual turntables looked pristine....
