I went to a local Starbucks to meet with my 5-14 clients today. We signed over email so I'd never seen them. Went in, sat down next to a young lady working on a computer. As I passed by it looked like "wedding type stuff" that she was working on. A few minutes pass and she gets a phone call and I overhear her talking about "the wedding". Okay, I've had this happen plenty of times before where I'm right next to the client and neither of us knows the other is there so as soon as she's off the phone I said "excuse me, are you Stephanie?" She says "No, I'm Erin". I explained that I was waiting for a wedding client and she asks what I do. "I'm a DJ" I told her. We then chatted a minute and I asked her, "When are you getting married?" and she says "May 14th." I then asked her "Where at?" and she says "Hermitage Golf Course". This is a frequent haunt of mine so I piped in and told her "Ah, you're working with Kara". She smiles really big and said "Oh, you know Kara?" I told her, "Yes I do. By the way, I'm the guy who's providing your uplights that night." (I've got 2 DJ+Uplights, 1 DJ+Photobooth and 4 cans being rented - 4 different venues that evening).

Kara had called me last month to rent 4 par56, incandescent cans. First time I've ever rented out old-style cans like that. Now, I've just met the bride herself. We chatted a bit more and I told her about the dead-spot (wireless mic) out on the lawn where they do the ceremonies, and the dead plugs in the pavillion (where they'll do the reception). She thanked me and finally left. About 5 minutes later, the client I was suppose to meet shows up. Kinda bizarre.

Yes I remember those days of surprise meetings with clients you have been contracted for. I was working for a multi in my early days in Canada. I drove with contract and details to a Legion in Langley BC and as I was setting up, A lady in a dress that looked like my Grandmas Curtains ( no offense to the lady but they looked like my Grandmas curtains) approaches me with a baby breastfeeding it. She instantly says Hello Im sure you must know I am the bride...........................That just about floored me and had some impact on my need to meet my clients ahead of time in the contract signing or planning meeting stages if at all possible.

Alrighty, here comes some serious stuff. You've all been alerted.

ittigger,

Based on the circumstances as related, I was assuming/hoping/praying that she was marrying the nursing baby's daddy.

I understand wanting to have a religious or civil wedding ceremony to officially and legally become betrothed, but a reception is a commemorative, congratulatory celebration. Making babies outside the parameters of a strong, established family, I.E. before marriage, is irresponsible and not deserving of such commemoration.

It is like having a baby shower for an unwed teenage mother. It elevates to and equates the irresponsible act with a substantially more responsible, worthy, and appropriate act. You wouldn't serve cake and ice cream at a drug intervention, would ya?

Perhaps this was her 2nd marriage? Or perhaps she did not want to marry her "baby's daddy" until she was sure she could make a life with him. The fact that she waited before jumping in and marrying the guy just because he got her pregnant is responsible and deserving of such a commemoration.

I think Rox's point was that THEY should have waited until after they were married before having children. People do different things for different reasons. Who knows what the reason was. He was stating his thoughts on the proper way it should have been done.

Didn't you say that the population of your town was 150 and everyone was related?:tribiggrin::tribiggrin:

I know what his point was I just don't agree with it. Yes in a perfect world that is the best situation but it doesn't preclude them from a reception to celebrate their marriage.

I think you're saying the same thing. In a perfect world, it should have been done that way. Most times, it doesn't happen that way. Regardless, people will still get married whenever they wish to. Maybe they planned to get married earlier and something happened to push the date down the road. Who knows - there are millions of possibilities.

You keep missing my point. Rox made a blanket statement about the woman in question saying she was not deserving of "such commemoration" I am merely saying that without knowing her circumstances you shouldn't judge.

Mike,

I simply made a statement about a specific unnamed and unidentified individual, you crawled under the blanket. :triwink:

Based on Tuck's post, his stated reaction, and personal experiences, I made some assumptions. If we are forced to establish every minute and insignificant friggin point before we can proceed with a discussion, we will never get to the truly important discussions like closeted metro-sexual beer drinkers decorating otherwise perfect pints of nectar with fruit or how $49 wireless microphone systems are just as good and reliable as systems costing 10x as much.

If this were a court of law or a structured, official debate, I would not make that assumption...but this is neither.

Must we get into an arguement about this? Rox has his thoughts and you have yours. Both are valid. At the very least, you can agree to disagree.
