Greetings ODJT family. Well, I'm stumped. Looked around in the VDJ forums & some around here....
During my gig last night, the "search" function in VDJ stopped working. Yep, I have the Pro version & have not had any issues until then. Ended up using the search function on the HD, which would find my songs. I then would drop it into whichever deck. So anyone have a clue????

Thanks!

Are you using the internal hard drive or an external?
If it's external is it AC powered or powered by the USB port?
Seems like you lost the VDJ Database or something corrupted it.

Another thing I recommend if using an external to avoid errors is Rick's (Softjock) MDIS utility available at his site to keep the hard drive spinning.

Spin is it an external drive if so it may have changed drive letter? Also your database may have gotten corrupted.

Thanks guys. I am using an external drive that is AC powered & connected directly to my lappy.
So, how would I fix the database? Why would the drive letter change?

Did you plug the HD in the same port? Check your settings/preferences and see if the Library Location has changed.

I plugged the HD into the same port. Checked all of the settings in VDJ & they all seem to be in the same place.
Anyone have a clue as to how to straighten it out?

You probably had an error in the database and you lost all the data for the tracks. I would open the folders individually in VDJ and add them and see if the files appear in the browser as you add them. VDJ may need to scan them again.

Why would the drive letter change?

You computer generally assigns the next open letter when you plug something in. It would change if you had another device plugged into your computer, or something else was plugged into your computer when you loaded the drive initially.

One of my guys...I can count on him for twice a year to call me panicked because his DJ software cant find the songs.....because.... it can't find the songs on drive "F" or whatever.

on window, You can change the letter back to the letter you want by going to control panel, admin tools, computer management, then disk management. Right click on the drive and select "change letter and path"

Scott has it nailed.

Each time the external drive is moved from computer to computer, if no previous drive letter assignment has been made, the operating system will assign the next available drive letter. If another drive is working on the system that had that specific drive letter already assigned, then it goes to the next open one.

Here's how you might save yourself some grief in the future although there's going to be some additional work.

Plug your externals into your base computer. Go into explorer and see what the drive letters are. Consider renaming them and then changing them to letters way down the alphabet such as R or S or W or ?? The likelihood of two externals being that far down are slimmer than if they are F or G or H. Then type compmgmt.msc into your run window and assign the letters. Do this on every computer so that your drive letter assignments remain consistent no matter which usb port you plug it into.

Typing out the steps is a long drawn out process however a 5 - 10 minute phone call while at your computer will set you up for good. Glad to help if you'd like to call.

Remember guys, we are assuming that the Drive letter is the culprit. If something in the DJ Software preferences have changed or got deleted by mistake, then all bets are off with the Drive Letter Change. Preferences and settings within VDJ need to be checked..

AHoustonDJ: What settings anywhere in VDJ preferences would deliberately change drive letters or corrupt a database?

Granted, the only setting that would make a database invisible is if the user clicks on the drive letter in the left windows and selects "Remove from search database". This doesn't change letters or corrupts the database, but it will make the information unavailable to search.

Got to cover all bases Cap, gotta cover all bases. Sometimes Computers do weird things .

AHoustnDJ: Understood, though rarely without human intervention, but possible.

My comment was that VDJ itself does not have the ability to cause the poster's problem within the parameters that was posted. If you think it might be a computer hiccup, what specifically do you think it is? What caused it and what would fix it?

While anything is possible, most times a problem is caused by human intervention. Many times completely unintentionally, and sometimes way too easily to cause a very undesired result. But I tend to look for something I did wrong first rather than assume the software is flawed. It's usually the case in 95% of the cases.

Thanks Cap! This is a great idea. Much better than me getting frustrated twice a year having to fix the same problem

Agree .. sometimes it's the simplest of things like sticking in a flash drive or smartphone and bumping drive letters up.

Hey Guys!
Thanks Cap - I just may take you up on that call.
Scott, I'm going thru, opening each folder & adding it to the search db. Time consuming but I want to make sure that the search function will work.
Rick - oh yeah I have Rockit. Just haven't installed it. Am working with the Hercules RMX at the moment.
I've been going over & over in my head & realized that the external HD WAS plugged into a different USB port!!! I didn't set everything up & didn't realize it was plugged into a different port!
Another interesting thing.....I have drives C, LENOVO D, DVD E & my external comes up as G. Ok, what the heck is LENOVO D (which doesn't open) & where did F go???

Thanks guys....I really do appreciate your help!

If "Lenovo D" is a small partition, it may be a recovery partition on the laptop to reinstall the operating system from. Many laptops do that in lieu of sending a recovery disc. And there may have been a temporary flash or something when the "G" drive was first installed.
