The Hercules DJ Control Steel has no soundcard(s) at all, so no, you can't use headphones. You'd have to use your own multichannel soundcard to have both a main output (your mix), and a cue output (headphones), as well as the ability to use microphone(s). So, it's not an all-in-one, as the RMX (and the MK2 before it), is.

However: it has a more interesting look (if you care about such things), all the LEDs light (not true on the RMX), the banks of 6 effect buttons have a "shift" button that allows for up to 12 different effects to be triggered by them, and the pitch bend are dedicated controls (they are among the 6, on the RMX). There are two parameter knobs that can be used in conjunction with the effects, as well. For example: you can adjust the depth and amount of a flange, as well as adjust the location of the start and end points of a loop that you create, so you can perfect it, before using it "live".

And it's $100 less.

That sounds like a match for me. Not because of the cheaper price that's just a plus... but because of the added features you mention would be very beneficial in my opinion.

I believe that is what I will get, after I get 3 more LEDRain cans.

I think it will be a good option for those who have soundcards that they already own and/or prefer.

Plus, I'm told rack kits will be available for both towards the end of the first quarter 2009. We showed prototypes of them at NAMM. I can take pics, if you'd like.

Sure go ahead and ship some pics with one of the NAMM demo units.... I'll PM ya the address ;)

I use VDJ without a controller and dont use automix.

Me and my friends tested manny softwares last week(i take time to do this because im in Bar with paperwork ower my head).

So to make a werry long storry werry short.
We tested:VDJ 5.0,Traktor 3.3,Rockit 4.0,Deckadance,Bpm studio Pro and by the way also the SAM Broadcaster(which can be used for Dj-ing also).

Our results are:
1.VDJ
Pro:clean,easy to use,good efects
Cons:Load time of the song

2.Rockit(not because of Rick)
Pro:werry short load time,clean
Cons:can not see the song at start, must work with 2 sound cards, imo too manny functions which i dont need

3.Tractor
pro:easy to use
Cons:must have a controller,Sinc is not so good as by VDJ

4.Deckadance
Pro:Dont have any
Cons:almost everything

5.BPM Studio
Pro:Can create nice playlists and can automix like i will
Cons:everytime you load songs it takes time

6.Sam Broadcaster 4.3.6
Its not in same category but anyway.
Its best for non life mixing Djs.Dont need the mixer at all-you can speak into the mic in chanel with any mic and mix the voice in software.Work also with only one soundcard.
Only to recomend.

P.S.
Tested with Laptop CoreDuo2,16 with 2GB Ramm and only one soundcard-only audio,NOT Video.

So maybe i helpt a bit with this test for guys which are buying some Software.
At the end the choice is youres.

Rob, if you right-click the "+" in the waitlist, you can choose the type of automix. I prefer the fourth choice down (fade, remove nothing), and an automix of 4 seconds. This gets me the best results for autoplay, during cocktails and dinners. I go "hands on" with my controller of choice (I think you know which one), after that.

Jon, you can easily add and remove from a playlist "on the fly". I often do.

Using the above method for Automix I placed several songs with BPM's fairly close to one another and created an automix playlist similar to what I'd do with OtsAV. So far the automix is ok using Steve's method. I don't particularly care for the silence between songs so I'm also trying it this way:

Fade (Remove Silence) still with the 4s crossfade time.

This seems to work very well within the same style of music with BPM's that are already close to each other.

Switching between genre's with BPM's close to the transitioning songs wasn't too bad IMO... btw I transitioned from Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who to One Wish - Ray J

Overall I'd say using the Fade (Remove Silence) may be better than (Remove Nothing)... YMMV and time will tell if I change my mind or not.

I just changed the Settings for the Crossfader type from Full to Scratch and I like the transitions even better.... still I believe with practice I can do better even without a controller and 2x better if I did have one than without.

I've heard that song...

Bump, Bump, Bump

Anyone out there that is a user with tips and tricks feel free to post them....

Yes! That is very kewl!

One of the reasons I want Windows 7 for. Multi touch touch screen capabilities!

That aught to completely change the user interfaces available to the DigiDJ/VJs.
