Toshiba has what I'm looking for, but it's $949 last time I looked at it. Also, I'm weary because it's a Toshiba. All my Toshibas I have owned turned slow, and slower after 1 year of use. Of course they were all lower end models too. I like my HP, I think I'll stick with trying to find a HP machine with everything I want in it.

If you can get a decent deal on the machine without the optical drive you can pick up a USB one for $25-$40 bucks

True, BUT that was my plan with my last laptop purchase as it did not come with a CD Drive. However, I never purchased a usb drive because:

A: It's another device taking up space when I use it
B: It's something else I'd have to transport if I want to have it's use during gigs

When I need to make CDs I have been using my back up laptop...which is SLOW. I make CDs with the ceremony music, bridal party intro, and 1st dance, parents dances on it for weddings to use. Always a back up in case something happens to laptop...also easier for me to use a CD for intros, and ceremonies...usually.

I use the optical drive space by removing it, replacing it with a hard drive caddy and add another 2tb of internal hard drive storage. If I need the CDROM, I'll take the caddy out, put the CDROM in; do what ever is needed, the swap it all back. One screw generally holds it in place.

What I really like is that with the hard drive caddy instead of the optical drive, when I tell people I cannot play their CD, I'm not lying. I'd have to shut everything down and make the swap twice.

Because I prefer the additional internal hard drive storage at bus speeds rather than external drives, I will not buy a laptop without one.

I looked for a caddy for my Lenovo. There was only one available and it was out of China with 1 or 2 reviews. I was leery of buying and having it not fit.

Where do you source your caddies from?
