"Steve, let me guess... 20 minute set-up and 10 minute tear down right? I get tired of hearing that crap from soooooo many DJ's on-line.
Actually it takes me about 2 hours to set it up by myself. I usually have a roadie with me and that cuts the time down to about 75 minutes. That's load-in and set up. I spend a bit of time concealing the wiring. And there is a lot of it!
Power lines to the rack, each of the two SRM 450's, the 1801Z Sub, 8 power lines out to the Par Cans, individual power lines to the Moonflower, The Strobe, The Laser, The Zodiac , and the VUE 3 fixtures, as well as a power line to the DMX circuit. Then we have the audio circuits going to each of the three speakers ans up the truss to the intelligent fixtures. It's definitely a job and a half!
The breakdown and haul out usually takes 1 hour. No matter how hard I try, haven't been able to trim that time at all.
But it is all worth it! The lighting enhances the show immensely!
When I did my very first show back in December of 1975, the lighting was the thing everyone talked about! Back then, all I had was a 2400 watt three channel color organ that operated 9 100 watt colored floodlights in color sequence to the beat of the music. I had three red, three yellow, and three green bulbs on three circuits, so that I could flood the dance floor with one color at a time. Lighting has come a long way since then, hasn't it?
