My impressions regarding the S400 StageMate

I went to visit the local Carvin Store here in Sacramento regarding the S400 StageMate (100 w 4 CH) BATTERY POWERED PORTABLE PA SYSTEM. I was impressed with the volume that the little speaker puts out. Volume setting was at 3 (possible 10) and the music was loud in the small demo room. The sound was good. Granted its not your regular speakers, but it will do the job regarding ceremony speakers or those bubble parties. Since the battery was not charged, in made it imposssile to take it out to the parking lot.

I love the idea that it’s battery powered and all you will need is a iPod plus, you’re free from a electrical outlet. You can plug this unit into an electrical outlet if necessary. The speaker only weighs about 34 pounds. 3 hour run time on one battery. Add another battery to double the time. An extra battery will run under 40 bucks. The sales rep did not know how long the charge time is if the battery dies.

The unit has 4 channel outlets and a RCA input for cds/tapes. A single speaker can cover about 200 people. An extension speaker can be added to this unit for more coverage.

3 band EQ for each channel
12VDC input jack to connect to a car’s 12-volt power source.
External speaker output: ¼” jack
Headphone: ¼” jack
Dim of the speaker: 12.75”W x 11.5D x 18.5H”, 34 lbs

StageMate comes with a one year warrenty.

Would I buy the S400 StageMate, not sure yet. I still need to hear what is out there. (i.e. Behringer 212A & Fender Passport)

I've wondered about these.
But, think about it. How long do rechargable batteries really last?
Each time you use them, they hold less & less.
I'd hate for it crap out during a ceremony.

I think i have some speaker stands in my basement that I'm not using...willing to let them go pretty cheap.

Just got off the phone with a sales rep at Carvin and he said he did not know how many hours the battery will last. He thinks about one years worth of use. He bases this on customers who bought the S400 StageMate. I was told to call back tomorrow and talk to a tech rep.

Alright guys, I just pulled the trigger and bought the Cavin StageMate battery powered speaker. The speaker needs an 8-hour charge before I can play with it outside.

This is my first battery powered unit. I will be using the speaker for wedding ceremonies and bubble/parachute parties. I’ll let you know on Sunday after I’m done playing with it over the weekend.

I'm not gonna give you a speaker suggestion ( though I like any of the smaller powered EVs for the job), but I am going to step WAY out of character:

Why bother hooking up the PC at all? For this ONE professional application, why not just an iPOD direct to the speaker? Considering that this only for the ceremonial music, why not keep it very simple and the load light?

....Don't get your hopes up, I would still only use CDs for the reception...:sqlaugh::sqwink:

I'm more curious as to how long of an event it can handle... like could I do a 3 hour kids party with it?

Maestro,

I just got the one speaker. I want to see how it handles before I spend any more money. I'm already in for $440 and change. The sales rep recommended a floor monitor for a 2nd speaker. He says its the same speaker only with rat fur and cheaper in price.
 
I haven't seen any reviews on the Stagemate. Let us know how it does, please. :)

One year? How does one define that? What if I do 5 parties a week with it and you do one party?

That might be good for cocktail music.
But for ceremonies, you will need a mixer to do it right.
I usually have 2+ wireless mics to control as well. (Minister, groom, reader, soloist, Etc.)

Bill, there's a nice little mixer built right into that little speaker; it even has a pair of stereo RCA in's. :sqbiggrin:
 
I typically put the speaker(s) up towards the front (over to the side)
As the DJ, my case & I are located in the back out of view, (where I can see as the bridal party starts)

I would not want to be standing behind a speaker controlling everything.
But that's my 02.

My bad, and you're right of course. I was thinking in terms of background music only.... Well, then I would add a low cost and lightweight iPod mixer. I just think it would be worth having everything ready and waiting in the main reception area as soon as move from one to the other occurs..
