I will be honest here! I think that this party was a no-brainer! If you are in this up on your music & your targeted audience, you should be ready & confident! These school functions are simple! If your game is tight, you can do it blindfolded! Simply put, middle school, high schools, college, bar scenes are all different age & music demographics. Know your audience, know your music, know your limits!

Well, drama keeps things exciting at times, and I think that it shows something about us DJs...we're passionate about what we do. Otherwise, there would be no drama over ways to do things, the way we read our crowds etc. We love what we do and we like influencing others. Nothing wrong with that.

The raw fact is that everyone that posted in this thread helped me with the gig in some way and it was hugely sucessful. In fact, I'm meeting with the sponsor tomorrow to sign their contract for the back to school dance and the end of summer celebration (its an awards banquet for their comp. team whose season ends at the end of the summer).

Heres the setup shot and the playlist. I'm electing not to post a separate gig log for this one since i'm not going to be posting crowd pictures out of respect for the students and the client. Needless to say, it was a fun event for me to perform and the crowd loved me :D *charm*.

It was an easy gig, and I was amazed at how well I was able to manage and manipulate the crowd. When I needed a circle for the hula hoop contest (to the song Shake It), the hosting cheer group started cheering "Make A Circle, Make Make A Circle", and the crowd moved. It was also interesting to watch as a song they knew came on, how a huge group would be doing the same thing at the same time and how if one of the 4-5 "leader" girls would start doing some specific move or routine during a song, i'd catch onto a group very quickly.

There were a lot of urban selections included. Lots of these were songs that were either requested at the dance or were part of a routine. One of the groups did a routine that was modeled after one of the recent dance movies so it had a lot of urban tracks like low in it and such. Biggest hits of the night: Birthday Sex (Super Clean), Hot N Cold, Goodbye and Low.

honestly, I do similiar gigs as you but I am 51. I was hoping you should know that group better than myself. That wa my issue. You did well. Kudos. Ron Ride the white pony.
 
Well, i felt solid about the gig from the beginning. But we all know that there are lots of good djs on here and you never know when someone might know something special, a "hidden gem" that works very well for them. Its all about learning and everyone has something to teach.

Not like I am suggesting you toss on a Santa suit and have them sit on your knee.

I used to go to the malls a couple times a year and just walk around in the summer and after new years, before the school dances. Most of the kids knew me as the DJ anyway, I did about 3/4 the middle schools. Sure some people might wonder why some guy has a gaggle of girls standing around him being loud and laughing. But I'd build a heck of a play list and always had a great time at schools. They did to, because I has their songs, had listened to them enough to know what one they wanted if didn't know the title or was hitting play on their request at the same time asking them what the song sounded like.

But yes, I will admit there have been times when I have been looked at funny by "older" people. These are the same people who complain about the content of even clean cuts. The same people that suggest I should play more ACDC or ZZtop or some other band with just as veiled lyrics.

You would be amazed at how many people forget the lyrics to Shook me all night long, or pearl necklace or even realize what the songs mean.
 
I've actually considered having a storefront in our local mall. Our mall hosts several "lock-ins" each year and always hire a DJ, but until now we've never pitched for the gig since it usually conflicted with my scheduling. A storefront is not very expensive, only about $250 a month and all of our mall is high traffic. You can do monthly leases and I think having a store with all of our gear set up and some music pounding would attract crowds, allowing us to give out promotional material, let client's view promotional media on the tvs and build a relationship with potential clients if nothing else. For $250 a month, its a small price to pay for 4-5 solid booked gigs.
 
Yeah, plus the mall is close and the back of the facility opens to a loading dock that would be very easy to move gear in and out of. I don't have many big functions this summer, just a lot of beach/pool party style gigs, so I could leave my QSC rig set up permanently along with our blacklight system.
 
Nice... Just for a stand in the mall here it's $350/week + 15% take. I like your mall better.

Actually I was placed there by the school. There were 7 other exits in the building that were completely unobstructed and all were double doors. Additionally there was a good 6 feet of space behind my system. If there was in fact a safety hazard, exiting the building would have been extremely easy especially since there were 4 other exits on the same glass wall I was on.

Hey man, I want to be as close to the door as possible. I can pack out my gear less wires in 2 min. Kids are young and fit, naturally closer to the floor, they can fend for them selves. :sqwink:

I too have been placed in some absurd places. Exits are there for a reason and should always be clear. Even though there are multiple other doors, and it seems utterly unreasonable to make an issue out of it, it's good to set the example.
