and you are not the DJ. Your good friend wanted you to just have a good time and enjoy yourself and your mutual friends.

You do not know the other DJ.

1. In general, do you go up and say anything?

2. If you see some weakness, do you give him any pointers?

3. If he totally sucks, do you say anything?

I will wait a while to see if I like the guy. If I do then I will wander up, offer my card, get his, and ask him if he'd be interested in getting together some time for networking. I never pass up a chance to network.

2. If you see some weakness, do you give him any pointers?

Only if solicited.

3. If he totally sucks, do you say anything?

I probably leave.

This actually happened to me at my friend's wedding. My friend knew that Ducky and I DJed and his mom even said they should hire us. My friend flat out said, nope none of my friends are working...they're going to be able to enjoy themselves.

So what did we do. We chilled and had a good time and at the end of the night, we told the DJ that we liked the job he did, introduced ourselves as DJs in the Lafayette area (the party was in Indy) and we swapped cards and left it at that.

I rarely get to go out and experince parties. I can't think of any in the last 15 years. The last party with a dj was my aunts wedding and that was 15 years ago. I know the DJ and he's still at it and a good DJ.

It depends on how or what mood I'm in at the time. I'm the kinda guy that can piss other DJ's off. So generally I stay my distance and say nothing.

If the guy sucks I let the person who booked the guy know and try to get their future business.

Maybe before I'm leaving or at the end of the night.. Just a simple introduction and exchange of business cards. If he has a crappy disposition or bad attitude, I'll pass. If he or she is a pleasant sort, by all means.

2. If you see some weakness, do you give him any pointers?

Hell no....the more they suck the better I look! :sqlaugh:

3. If he totally sucks, do you say anything?

Not to him or the client(s). Under my breath to my wife, yes.

:sqwink:

Sometimes I like to request a real obscure song that always works well to see a surprised look.

2. If you see some weakness, do you give him any pointers?

Only if he looks like he really needs them or the party is suffering.

3. If he totally sucks, do you say anything?

No, but if he's killing my friend's party then I will offer some assistance. After all, I want my friend's party to be enjoyable for him and not stressful.

These questions aside, I would hope my friend would have enough sense to at least pick my brain about how to hire a DJ. I generally don't hire anybody for a service without a little research first.

at my 25th HS reunion, the place that held it threw in a DJ for free for renting the place.

I would never go up to a DJ and give them pointers.
He played mostly 80's stuff. Everything was fine early on. Later on, girls wanted to dance, but he only played 80's stuff. The committee president came to me and asked me to tell him some modern songs that they could dance to. I went to him and requested some songs. He said he only brought 80's stuff with him and nothing else...which was even more odd because he had a computer. Plus he was wasted. He went outside to puke.

My wife suggested that I go home and get at least an ipod with some modern music. First off, I didn't want to and secondly, there was only an hour left and i would have been back with only about 25 minutes left. So I didn't.

after several people asked, I did go to his computer and pick out some songs...after I sent someone outside to ask him first...he said no problem.

If I was to answer yes to any of those questions if would be AFTER the show.

I only answered no to #1 becuase at every show (or it seems) there are 2-3 other "dj's" that either currently dj or did "back in the day". Those guys ALWAYS come while I am mixing into the next song, about to make an annoucement or basicly doing anything where the last thing I want to be is interrupted.

No on all three counts. To be honest I have seen many skilled mobiles at work here and there. Very few DJs I've seen I would call poor performers.

Unsolicited advice is rarely welcomed. If the client wants to make suggestions, that's one thing. She's paying the DJ. As a guest, I'm just that ~ a guest. :)
