So you want to learn SEO?

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!

Urgh, you can play the validation game all day or week. :D Fix one error and another crops up. I rarely come across a complex site that fully validates. I have no time nor patience to track down the smallest of misplaced characters or lines of CSS to please a machine.

If you, me, and the spiders can read the site I'm good. :)

I am concerned about the meta-robots though. I do have a robots.txt in place and wonder what's up with that. Thanks for pointing it out.

I can't remember who was talking about DMOZ but that looks interesting to me. I've already signed up and signed up to volunteer as an editor as well. Couldn't help but notice that, even though there aren't a lot of entries for photo in our area, the ones who are on this list are some of the big dogs in the area. Has anyone here had any experience in listing with DMOZ, enough to speak to how effective it is?

its free so go for your life Rick

DMOZ is so 7 years ago. Sorry to sound like a snotty valley girl. :D There was a time (08-09ish) when getting listed on DMOZ was a huge deal. It pretty much guaranteed you a higher organic placement in Google. That is until there were a few scandals where volunteer editors were accepting payment to either list or deny listing sites. You can read about some of it on Wikipedia: DMOZ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since then a few things have happened:
  • Directories in generally are no longer relevant (if they ever were in the first place.) I've never had someone tell me they found any site from a directory. We just Google everything today and back in the day we just "Yahooed" stuff.
  • I cannot prove it but I suspect DMOZ lost it's 'holy grail' status with Google after the paid placement/site blocking controversies.
  • Google generally looks at directories as spam havens. I used to run a few solely to bulk up back links for myself, clients, and exchanges with other webmasters. I stopped messing with them around 2010 when Google essentially said that directory links will count against the site rather than for.
  • Lastly, organic search results are being forced further and further down the page by paid ads that if DMOZ carries any extra weight these days, I doubt it would help place you on the first page if you aren't already there.
I tried to get ODJT listed a few times back in the day. It so happened that the guy who ran the category moderated at another board. My applications were never responded to; Big surprise.

I'm not saying it would hurt. If you can get listed without much effort, go for it. I am saying that sinking hours into trying to get a listing or becoming a section moderator and the enviable time sink that comes with that is just a waste of your time.

I wont be posting ideas again - have a nice day

I'm with Hampton, I don't understand it and I don't want to... I would love to find someone to give access to my wonky homemade site and put some seo on it....

My entry hit DMOZ during the past month, not exactly sure when. During the past month I've had more traffic from it than from TheKnot. Not enough info yet to make a fair assessment but it did surprise me at how high it's showing up, this early in the game.

That's interesting. Please keep me posted. I thought DMOZ was barely a ranking factor anymore.

UPDATE:

For the past month, I've been working on my site's rankings and studying everything I can find on how it works. Don't know how much you guys have really delved into this, but it has been incredibly frustrating and over-whelming at times. What I've also learned is that photography competition is magnitudes more difficult than DJ. On DJ, my page is ranked around #4, and I suspect that's mostly because the backlinks that sites where I advertised were buying them. The keywords on photography have a lot more competition, and I've just now gotten to position #87 on my main keywords. It is a slow process, usually requiring 2 weeks between each re-index from the search engines. The pattern has been study, study, study, makes changes, wait, then see if it did anything. Study some more, make more changes, rinse and repeat.

I've gotten a few sites that I like for SEO tuning, and will share them below. I'm wondering if any of you guys have dug into this, and whether you have any fav sites that you use and wouldn't mind sharing. Here are mine:

100% Free SEO Tools - online SEO tools

I use or have used most of the same ones as you Rick. I have been pretty lax on SEO recently but my competition is much less than yours so I can be

About once a month I do some reading on Google Webmaster tools just to have a peek at what's new and what the Google machine likes this week

Here's a few good ones most are free they list some are trials and some paid

In adding to the continuing discussion, do you guys have Facebook and Google+ share buttons on your websites? You should. Most of the info I'm reading these days is showing that the number of times your page is shared via social media seriously impacts your google (and other search engine) rankings. I've added it to both of my sites.
