Aac (.mp4. .m4a) was designed as a successor to mp3, removing most of its limitations on audio quality. Unfortunately, it hasn't been supported by enough vendors (probably due to licensing requirements of the codec writers). Apple and Sony are big proponents.

Apple and Sony are the worst at keeping people from using their bought hardware the way they want to. Sony even took away the ability to put linux in your PS3 (making it illegal) Apple is now doing the same with the Iproducts making it illegal to use custom software in them.
