ShowXpress or Freestyler.

But, I will argue that both are marketing to two different clientale. :sqwink:

I agree if by that you mean to say that ShowXpress doesn't allow for multiple venue/lighting setups to be saved and recalled....

For example in Freestyler I have two show designs: one that includes all of my advanced lighting and one that is just my basic setup....

That's just another flaw...although, they want you believe it's so easy to just load one up from a backup. :sqeek:

To me, Sxpress is designed for the highend theatrical clients.

Freestyler is geared towards the mobile jock.

I have been using showxpress for a few months, and it is definitely easy to get a show up and running once I got the software figured out. But, there is very minimal support via the website, that's for sure. I have tried several times to get admitted to the "thelightingcontroller.com" site, with no results. There is a decent forum there with lots of info and stuff though.

I did download freestyler and am trying to figure it out, but haven't got very far with it yet unfortunately.

I just browsed over to their forum and found this tip for moving light scenes.

instead of making a scene that will scroll through the gobos and lights and movements automatically. Make some scenes for just the movements, with no colors or gobo's selected. Then make some scenes that just select the colors, and more that just select the gobos. Now you can add them together to use any combination of movements, colors, and gobos on demand. I think that's my best bet for getting my moving lights programmed so I can just pick and choose what I want.

i think we will have to ask our pros here when they get a chance to have a tutorial or something on the how-to on the software, proper setting up and programming etc.

Ben uses showxpress extensively, and has got me using it and once he explained the basics, it wasn't that bad to learn. I still haven't played with making my own moving light scenes though.

I don't know anybody else that uses software for lighting in my area, so I'm all alone at this point in my part of the world.

Absolutely!!! We give you a 15 day free trial which will work with your existing interface (if you have on) the only built in limitation is the 15 days other than that it is fully functional.

Ben

Is there a demo version we can try before shelling out the $347? So we can test it and see if it works for us.

I think you are both correct. In my analysis over the last year there are the following factors to success.

1. Ease of use (software interface) - Mobile DJs need something easy to use without the engineering style of programming.
2. Hardware Interface - the actual cost of the interface needs to be inexpensive as they can get broken or lost in a mobile dj setup.
3. Cost - The average dj won't spend much more than they get for a single gig.

BTW, I just got word that VenueMagic is now available in the following Guitar Center Stores (if you don't want to wait for it to be shipped):

Chicago, IL
Houston, TX
Hallandale, FL
Brooklyn, NY

more stores to come soon...

We've already got the pro tutorials done for VenueMagic if you'd like. Just head over to venuemagic.com and you can watch them online. I'd love to hear your feedback about them.

Have fun,

Ben
